It's like weeds...who decides a plant is a weed ? The lawn & garden police? Just because humans don't like it's presence on their suburban lawns or in their gardens , suddenly it's an invasive species, ready to grow to unbelievable proportions and most likely..EAT US ALIVE ;)

Excellent Idea String : a bit about them:
Often mistaken for ticks (as babies) or moths (as adults), the spotted lanternfly is neither. Instead, it is known as a “hopper” and grows its wings only in the adult stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20am
alanSixº:

if it extremely throws the ecosystem out of balance due to a lack of predators - so like the deer in essex county are eating all the nature reserves like south mountain reservation and mills reservation because their are no wolves around to keep their population in balance - so like hawks were reintorduced to parts of new jersey to balance the squirrel and chipmunk populations and that worked out well - but yeah no species invades with the effect of us humans so its funny that we get to decide whats "invasive"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21am
alanSixº:

and i am all for reintroducing wolves to essex county NJ but thats gonna be a hard sell :)

Most of what urban dwellers consider invasive is such because humans have destroyed the habitat they once called home. I'll never forget seeing a deer running down rt 21 in Newark & thinking, poor thing, he's got nowhere to call home anymore

"Their numbers have risen dramatically since the 1990s, when Mayor Daley’s various greening projects began to invite more woodland creatures into an urban environment. Drawn by the elevated heat level of the city, rabbits began spreading from parks into grassy areas like expressway ramps, and even made their way into the Loop."
  7:53am
dday:

@alan: the summer resident (citiots) that come here, leave their garbage all over outside their homes & then complain "there's a bear problem." I can't wait until they leave for the year. So much more peaceful when they are gone (guns, loud music, drunken fighting etc.)

greetings, Amanda! Jim!

been listening, digging (getting ready to head out for kitty sitting ! 🐱🐱)

i have noticed Lantern Flies mostly around newer buildings -- last year, all over the side of one of the high rises near the 9th Street light rail station in Hoboken -- and this year, tons of them around that 80 story building near Exchange Place (marketed as "the tallest building in New Jersey") (next day i saw a dude spraying some sort of insecticide, on the trees outside the building too) -- a friend pointed out that maybe the Lantern Flies had laid eggs in some of the construction materials -- ??

but stomping them, killing the Lantern Flies? i just cannot do that -- mainly because my brain completely short-circuits whenever humans refer to another species as "invasive" and "destructive" -- how much damage have we done to Polar Bears, Monarch Butterflies, Bees, etc., all in the name of "progress"? -- and of course if i got caught sabotaging logging equipment, i would be arrested and labeled an "eco-terrorist" 🌱🌿🌲

Coyotes range near here in downtown Toronto now, but I never see or hear them. Only their work. And they eat someone's pet now and then, so that gets attention. They travel the river valleys, next to the express routes. They're like ghosts.

There's a local HOA around here (I'm not part of) but I attended a few of their "lake health" meetings.

After listening to these clowns go on & on about what algaecide is best to dump in the lake to clear the water from being brownish (especially along the shore where many lakefront owners rake their leaves directly into the lake in fall).

I said "why don't people stop raking their leaves into the lake. That will stop the browning as what you see are naturally occurring tanins from leaf decomposition (think tea).

They told me I'm not a member so I have to leave. SMFH

@dday -- exactly! my Mom HATED seeing dead deer on the side of the road, and one even died in back of the house because -- hunters 🤬🤬🤬

when i was growing up though, we rarely saw deer -- and yes, the house we lived in was invasive too, but there was a farm behind our "property," and tons of wooded areas . . . until much of it was destroyed in order to build mcmansions

I once rescued a baby bird that fell out of its nest. I put it in a basket in a tree near where I found it, lined with soft cloth. The mother came and rescued it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09am

Not forcing water on a bird is very important! Birds can't cough, so trying to give it water with an eyedropper will just give it aspirational pneumonia
Avatar 8:12am

@dday -- yup! like humans complaining about "wildlife" getting into their trash -- DUH! i grew up in "the sticks" and everyone basically took preventative measures so that would not happen (like not throwing away food, for one thing!)

thank you for the bird rescue information!!!

Wild Bird Fund (in NYC) and The Raptor Trust (in NJ) have a lot of helpful tips too

when i was little, we rescued a baby Robin -- my Dad built a wooden crate for the little guy, my Mom and sister and i fed him earthworms -- TOTALLY drove the cats nuts! 😸😸 . . . we would take him outside, eventually he must have known he was "grown up" enough, and he flew away
