Hey subterraneans! Thanks for being with us yet again. It’s all in the beat, ain’t it?

WR:

Ah, a preview, I was just looking and didn't see the album listed yet on ESP bandcamp page.
Avatar 10:50pm
Mr Fab:

How perfect would it be if you were to now play the song that inspired Richard Hell “beat generation,“by Rod McKuen?

Scott67:

G'day Laurie, John & Subconscious!
🍻😎🤙📻🌻☀️🌏

Dad says “That’s the problem with your generation, listening to songs like ‘born to lose”
🌃 Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
WR:

Unless you dad is over 80 years old or under 50 this song is from his generation.
Avatar 10:55pm
Mr Fab:

Actually that song came out during what was probably your dad‘s generation!

G'day Bri!😎🤙💨🌻

WR: the album hasn’t dropped just yet. Hoping any day.

Beneath the Underground:

Bri: Johnny wasn’t a model citizen but he is an icon of punk. Gotta love him.

but remember kids, Johnny Thunders died for your sins, don't become a junkie.

WR: words of wisdom
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Beneath the Underground:

Peeps, if anyone has some poetry-laden music you’d like to hear, lemme know. If we can, we will play it
🌃 Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
WR:

Langston Hughes? He did something with Mingus and some other jazz band.
Avatar 11:20pm
Mr Fab:

Hmm, spoken-word+music..? Laurie Anderson, King Missile, Jim Carrol, tho not from NYC: Capt Beefheart, John Cage...
Avatar 11:21pm
Mr Fab:

That's great stuff, WR. and Sun Ra had some nutty spoken-word/poetry tracks.
Avatar 11:29pm
Mr Fab:

"Twisted" Yes! I admit when you played Lambert, Hendricks & Ross earlier, I was instantly reminded of this classic.
🌃 Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
WR:

The High Lord Buckley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Beneath the Underground:

I love anything Langston Hughes! Laurie Anderson is always cool. King Missle. Let me see what we’ve got……..
Avatar 11:37pm
Mr Fab:

Really, everything you're playing is great. His Royal Hipness Lord Buckley, Ken Nordine, all faves.
Avatar 11:39pm
Mr Fab:

a King Missle song with actual singing,
not poetry-isizing? Well, whatdoyaknow...
🌃 Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
WR:

King Missile is new to me and seems to be something I should know about. Thank you for playing!
Avatar 11:42pm
Mr Fab:

That was unusual for them WR - usually their tracks feature very funny, wry spoken-word over groovy music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Beneath the Underground:

John S Hall, the front man, is a poet primarily. He’s still active and has several bands now, released a very bizarre LP on green vinyl about 2 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Beneath the Underground:

King Missile’s “hit” was Detachable Penis!

Now gotta go look to be sure I have this Mingus record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Beneath the Underground:

We will be closing out with this epic work of Charles Mingus, spoken word by Jean Shepherd
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Beneath the Underground:

WR it’s one of Mingus’ many great albums. One of my faves. And w Shepherd you cannot go wrong
🌃 Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
WR:

Yep, I have The Clown in a CD compilation. I try to have all Mingus recordings close at hand. The Mingus / Langston Hughes I have on vinyl. Don't think I have it on CD or digital.
Avatar 11:57pm
Mr Fab:

This has been such a great episode - glad i was around to actually listen to the whole thing this time.

WR:

I was looking for a book I read from the library last year by a French man who was around in the early NY punk scene. He was friends with Johnny Thunders and wrote a lot of the goings on between the main folks of that scene. Had fun but sad anecdotes.

Thank you John and Laurie! Laters all.
