Quick hi (have to wait for Earle, one of my favs), then off to meditate, will return.
Hi Sam and Horsefaced (and not horsefaced).

Gotten to see him acoustic twice, need to catch Earl electric one of these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm

If you can't beat the heat, eat it! Good thinking, drowsy!

Sam Segal:

Welcome, Doc! I've just discovered and fallen in love with the Steve Earle bluegrass album. Saw him once with an electric band during the benefit he does at Town Hall for his son's school.

You're making it very hard for me to leave for Headscape, not nice...

last time i saw steve earle was in the LSD tour in 2018– lucinda williams, steve earle, dwight yoakam. amazing night!!

territory?

Elvin:

I also took banjo lessons in grade school. My family had a four string banjo that was passed down from some relative. I was taunted by a classmate and gave it up pronto. I’ve always regretted doing so.
Avatar 10:14pm
northguineahills:

you'd think being born in west virginia of west virginian parents and west virginian grandparents, i would have heard country/bluegrass growing up. But, sadly, they considered such music beneath them (whatever that means)....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Sam Segal:

@NGH, I would absolutely let a horse write my emails.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Sam Segal:

zzz, that tour sounds like a dream line-up...I love all three of those artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Sam Segal:

Territory! Yes, Chresti! I need to hire you on as a Word Consultant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Sam Segal:

Elvin, I don't blame your elementary school self...hard to resist the anti-banjo peer pressure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Sam Segal:

@NGH, what kind of music did your West Virginian family prefer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
chresti:

We had a guitar, harmonica, ukulele, recorder and bongos when I was growing up. None of us took lessons.
Avatar 10:21pm
northguineahills:

@Sam: mother's side? i have no idea (whatever was popular in the day?) . Although, when my grandmother gave me a lot of my grandfather's records, there was a lot of jazz and classical...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Sam Segal:

No bongo lessons, Chresti??
Avatar 10:22pm

(the later was my father's side).

chresti, we recently found out that your father had a blues band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Sam Segal:

Greetings, welcome, and hello, Coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Sam Segal:

Glad you're digging, zzz. I need more of it in my listening too. I lost my connection to this music a bit during the pandemic...trying to catch up on new stuff from artists I like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
zzz:

was going to ask if youve made any mix/playlists or a show devoted to this
Avatar 10:29pm
northguineahills:

oh, wow, I just sent a mix to a dj (by their request) that I used a kode9 sample....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
zzz:

NGH do you post your mixes anywhere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Sam Segal:

Yeah, I'd love to check them out too.
Avatar 10:33pm
northguineahills:

@zzz: not really. I thought I scrubbed the interwebs of them a few years ago in a manic "what in the ever love of what is good was I doing (in retrospect)?", but a few escaped my notice, and I was able to dig a few up....

hit me (eip), and i'll throw them to ya...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm

rw! It's you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
zzz:

some bite on this for a recent-ish ECM release
  10:54pm
rw:

Bring on the avant jazz funk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Sam Segal:

That track has the most bite of any on the album, I think. Really great recording though. The songs with vocals are great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Sam Segal:

What do we think? Is this avant jazz funk or is this avant jazz funk?
Avatar 10:57pm
northguineahills:

it's avant jazz that's fallen into a funk cave....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Sam Segal:

Can't imagine the smell in a funk cave.
  10:59pm
rw:

This is what I call avant jazz funk. From deep out of the avant jazz funk cave...
  11:01pm
rw:

That's just the thing. You can't imagine. You just have to experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Sam Segal:

Still in the cave, I think...
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
WR:

Henry Threadgill! Hello central, calling doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Sam Segal:

I think Doc J is off in meditation land.
  11:13pm
rw:

Are we crawling out of the cave?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Sam Segal:

Crawling out of the cave, trying not to be discovered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
doctorjazz:

WR, 😉!
Yeah, was off in Headspace, missed Threadgill (though I have so much of his stuff, much in both digital and vinyl, bit always happy to catch him on the air).
Mostly have to catch up with the shows that go to midnight in the next day-be Horsin' around tomorrow at work before the live dinner shows start at noon.
Nice accordion, vibes, love it (took lessons as a kid, despised it then).
  11:23pm
rw:

Should I don the headphones or should I make a hot chocolate?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
doctorjazz:

Porque no los dos?
  11:25pm
rw:

Thanks Sam. Back in a sec...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Sam Segal:

Wow, I'm learning a lot about the uncommon instruments people took lessons on when they were kids tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
doctorjazz:

Accordion lessons, that is... I weighed about 60 lbs, dragged a 40 lb accordion on 2 busses in Brooklyn to go to my lessons. The only song I ever remember learning was The Wedding Waltz ("Oh, how we danced, on the night we were wed...")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
doctorjazz:

When you said "by Polish...",I thought he was bipolar...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Sam Segal:

Hahaha that would be quite a way for me to categorize an artist, Doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Sam Segal:

Where were your accordion lessons provided, Doc?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
doctorjazz:

Dinner music studio, somewhere in Flatbush, I think.
Not sure I'd call it jazz, free jazz, new improvised music, do really dig it, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
chresti:

Thanks Sam! I took clarinet lessons when I was 30, after my parents gave me a clarinet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Sam Segal:

How did learning clarinet in your 30s go, Chresti?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
doctorjazz:

OK, I posted enough in 15 movies to cover my 2 hour allotment.
Be hitting the bed, catch the rest tomorrow, thanks, Sam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Sam Segal:

Yeah, "new improvised music" would've been a better catch-all term.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Sam Segal:

Sleep well, Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm

  11:43pm
rw:

I played clarinet in Jr. High band. Had forgotten about that! I really liked it, but didn't fit in so well socially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Sam Segal:

Maybe playing clarinet would've been cooler socially if you'd referred to it as "the licorice stick." Then again, maybe not.
Avatar 11:45pm
northguineahills:

@rw: you should have tried french horn (socially), and i stuck to it from JH through HS and borrowed a friend's to play in college and later....
  11:48pm
rw:

ngh, sounds like you know from experience!

Sam, if only we could revisit our past knowing what we know now...
Avatar 11:50pm
northguineahills:

@rw: french horns are expensive, but i did find an old cornet to play (w/ some old french horn mouth pieces from time to time)
Avatar 11:53pm
northguineahills:

thanks, sam! t'was fun!
  11:54pm
rw:

ngh, I skipped playing anything in HS (except for Eno LPs) and got a beat up saxophone in college to squawk on. Still got it in the closet! Sounds somewhat parallel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
coelacanth∅:

my older sister took french horn lessons, and my older brother took cornet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
coelacanth∅:

(coincidentally)

i took saxophone, but they insisted on alto and i didn't have any interest in it.
i wanted to sound like Bobby Keys.
  11:58pm
rw:

There was a tuba in the house here briefly. I wish my son would have stuck with it. Mostly because I liked having a tuba in the house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
coelacanth∅:

i've never touched a tuba
  12:00am
rw:

Okay, the hot chocolate is kicking in. Thanks Sam! Take care everyone.

coel, you should get you one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04am

Got to hear the whole show, great one, Sam, country, Bluegrass, jazz THREADGILL (!!!!), thanks so much!
