Hi Taylor and fellow Fuji Boxers!

Tucking myself into this program

Have heard many Carlos Hagen programs but not this one.

Hi Jan & Hy & WR!

Rich in Washington:

Hellooooooo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
ironybread:

Hiya Rich! Our own Franklyn Zappa is now bringing the avant-garde to the squares!
  Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
WR:

In the many many Zappa documentaries, have never heard any mention of this or similar performances.
  Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
WR:

Very Varese, shall we say? But already very Zappa.
  1:24pm
Mr. Oxford:

Hello everyone!

I am also remembering Zappa playing the bicycle as an instrument on a TV show hosted by Steve Allen during the early to mid 60s.

Hi Mr. Oxford!

Arrived to be soaked in the deluge. Hoping to be soaked in decurling later on.

Mr. Oxford:

I love the title of today's program "Hallway Cassette Hockey" and the accompanying cassette collage image.

Hi Sem! Hi Kat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
ironybread:

Apologies by the way for the extreme level imbalances between the performances and Frank's monologues - Carlos recorded this from the audience and he rode the levels in real time as best he could

Hi Ironybread and Puzzlers! Enjoying this kulcha while I can. On Wednesday I'm headed to Wichita Kansas (aka City of Seven Flat Places) to visit my mother (Zippelyn) in a rest home. Been preparing by watching simulated place crashes on Youtube. They are created with such painstaking love!

Hiya Zip! Break a wing!
  Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
WR:

where are the record library pics from?
  1:40pm
Mr. Oxford:

Came across the transcription for this Zappa lecture/music performance: https://www.donlope.net/fz/radio/1963_KPFK.html

Wherever that library is, I can smell the mildew

Photos are from the bunker at the Carlos Hagen-Lautrup residence, Malibu, from whence this tape master originates

Thanks for the link Mr. Oxford!

Mr Fab:

Ahoy, ironybread! Also had no idea this existed.
A sign for Zappa’s “Barking Pumpkin” studio was on Ventura Blvd for years, even well after he died. I foolishly never took a pic of it (nor can I find a pic online)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
ironybread:

Hiya Fab! My only visit to Barking Pumpkin on Ventura was when I gave them a copy of this tape - I didn't get a peek inside, sadly

Hiya chresti!
  Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
WR:

Interesting, I read the transcript before hearing the post performance discussion, and I heard different voices in my mind. Particularly the person who said it reminded them of hysterics, I had read that in a male voice.
  2:00pm
Mr. Oxford:

But really making music is all about making music the way one always wanted music to sound. That's how I think everyone making music should think. Make the music you want to make. #ThatsTheWayIveAlwaysWantedMusicToSound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
ironybread:

Hi chresti!
  Swag For Life Member 2:01pm

Yes, Mr. Oxford, for the link.

The Big Surfer, maybe sold 6 copies....

Kat in Chicago:

Thank you for sharing Carlos’s story. A hero!
  Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
WR:

Thanks for the Hagen info. Lorenzo Milam had a shelf of Hagen tapes which I heard when he broadcast them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
Zipperhead7:

Ouch . . . tossing shellac discs. A friend said that a group of folks met regularly in a basement at Columbia U to play cylinder recordings, and then at some point someone would announce "Now we shall turn to the discs"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm
Zipperhead7:

A good friend is completing a book on cassettes for Duke U Press. I've read the manuscript and it's terrific. Working title is "Unspooled: How the Cassette Made Music Shareable"

Will a Sound Guy:

Hi Taylor and all!!!
  2:11pm
Mr. Oxford:

Unfortunately, I have to leave. Thanks ironybread for yet another interesting show (and this time it included something about Zappa many of us didn't know about).

I will catch up on the show in the archives.

WR:

I read your link on your adventures with Hagen. So, what is the status of the Hagen research facility?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
ironybread:

Sadly I don't know - several years ago I talked with his attorney & friend, who was executor of his will and was administering the trust - haven't got an update from her since
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
ironybread:

FYI, other atrocities from the Doo Doo Radio crew in Spring 1992 on KUOI included the episode "Call-In A Cappella Jazz", a twin salute to Olivia Newton-John and Napalm Death, and a tribute to ABBA (our second annual ABBA-thon, in fact: "ABBA-Dabba II")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
Zipperhead7:

That's a wonderful story about your work with Hagen. "Ah, yes, the Capri!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm

maybe the funniest thing that's ever happened to me as an archivist
  2:28pm
Kat in Chicago:

LOL lil Taylor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm

I wonder what the "boing" instrument is. I want one! Jew's harp?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm
Will a Sound Guy:

Thank you Taylor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm
Zipperhead7:

Well, Taylor, this show has been all over the place . . . which is why we're here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm

Thanks for listening again everybody!
  3:00pm
Kat in Chicago:

Thank you, Taylor!
  Swag For Life Member 12:26am
WR:

Thank you again for the Hagen / Zappa old days recording. On the web site that Mr Oxford linked to, they have out of date links to the firesign theatre site Natural Disaster Telethon page. A web, but tangled.
