	👻 6:09pm Austin Rich: I was reading today that "Blade Runner" was originally green-lit by Alan Ladd Jr., based on the success of having green-lit "Star Wars." "Blade Runner" is a noir story in a Sci-Fi setting... a nice lineage for the Ladd family.

	👻 6:10pm Austin Rich: Freud's work was not exactly "common" in the late 40's, in spite of hive having published already. It would be more in the 50's that psychoanalysis begins to take hold in the popular culture, but it would make sense that the writer of this episode was probably fairly well read... and therefore, aware of Freud's work from college.

It has a little more research than most of the other noir / pseudodetective shows, and certainly Mr. Holiday is a little more erudite than your average joe, too. Since Dan is a writer, I suspect the writers of this show wanted to reflect that... and do the research themselves.

The teacher didn't believe I'd read it, thought I'd just watched the movie. So I put her to shame by publicly naming the differences between the book and the movie.

	👻 6:28pm Austin Rich: This scavenger hunt in an old house is something I'm an absolutely sucker for, but I'm sure we could all come up with a ton of examples of a similar stories in a number of adjacent genres. It's a nice story trope that's easily grafted onto a number of formats.

This is the week before Christmas Eve, so depending on the region, some kids would be home, and some people would already be off work for the holiday. I feel like that shades the way we'll hear the next few weeks of shows.

	👻 6:50pm Austin Rich: Certainly there's a long tradition of adventure fiction that uses the "island" and "native" tropes as a story element. It's always a little misguided, and at this point, is probably as much influenced by the similar story in King Kong, a well known and widely seen movie with natives on an island acting very primitively.
	👻 6:51pm Austin Rich: None of that makes the crimes of this show "right" or "okay" given context; it was wrong as it is now. This is merely a reflection of that part of our past, presented for consideration.

	👻 7:07pm Austin Rich: Dimension X often has a "creepy" flavor to the stories that aren't comedy. This one definitely depends on some old horror tropes.
	👻 7:15pm Austin Rich: I was imaging what it would be like, if someone did an edit of Chandu, with just the "plot advancing" moments from each installment. I suspect that you could cut down each episode to about five minutes.

	👻 7:21pm Austin Rich: I edited another show down, getting rid of the "next time," "Previously on," and other bits like that, and instead just kept the story bits. I was able to cut out about 40 minutes from the overall running time of the entire serial that way. Went from 2 1/2 hours to 1 Hour, 50 Minutes.

	👻 7:26pm Austin Rich: I believe that was the "Friday" installment of the show, which means that listeners would have to wait two days for the next part of the story! Of course, we only listen to one Chandu a week, so our pace is off.
	👻 7:28pm Austin Rich: The sound isn't great this week. I did some EQ and noise reduction to help improve it, but there are some limitations to the overall quality I can offer, even that way. Still, it's not bad... just... thin and weird sounding.
	7:28pm Listener Robert: I take it from this that Chandu's real name is Frank Chandler. That sounded familiar, so I looked up the Wikipedia entry on that name. Too bad Chandu was on too early for that to have been a tribute to pulp author Terry Harknett.

In 1950, the show took a few weeks off in October, where local stations either re-ran previous episodes of their choice, or put on some original material until there were new Dimension X episodes. (Which would, interestingly, be a "re-run," a new production of a script that they had already done, but this time for Halloween.) There wouldn't be a "new" episode until November, which was common practice for shows in those days. (And, for shows these days, even.)

	👻 7:46pm Austin Rich: It's not surprising that people who reading sci-fi in 1950 would also be reading other fringe writing. Perhaps the people who adapted this story had read Burroughs, too?
	7:48pm Mr Fab: Burroughs' "Junkie" was published in 1953, sez wiki.
	👻 7:48pm Austin Rich: The story version was published in 1934, but Fletcher Pratt. The radio version was adapted by George Lefferts, one of the in-house Dimension X writers. Lefferts is probably the one who used that slang.

There wouldn't be a "new" episode until November, which was common practice for shows in those days. (And, for shows these days, even.)
