In my dream last night, I was on a talk-show studio set in a reclining-back-low seat with my feet up on something, right close to, even amid, the stage biz. When a performer was about to do a number with the band and made a remark I don't recall about me there at my leisure, I said "The music is my hammock." This was very well received and prompted the musicians to carry on happily.
Glad to be here for the Friday swing of the hammock.
And here's hoping the Maine holiday gives the drummer some hammock-mesh impressions on his backside.

This is a real thing: In Sisquoc, a small town above Santa Barbara, the tarantulas do a yearly migration in the Fall. I was standing on the side of the road positioning myself to take a picture of one carefully crossing the street when a big truck came barreling down out of nowhere and ran the tarantula over making it fly up in the air and do a double flip before landing - flat as a pancake.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am
Franco Twinkie:

This too: My girlfriends parents lived in Ojai, high up in the hills. One night when her folks were elsewhere, we were making dinner, a tarantula fell out of the ceiling. It made a hollow pop - kind of like a ping-pong ball when it hit the tile floor, and flew to pieces.

Doug Schulkind:

Oh ho ho ho, it's solo!
Avatar 10:29am
Listener Gregory:

It's indeed a very good album, sounding like Art Pepper was the actual leader.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am
Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I believe Hugh Hefner threatened to sue. That's why it was changed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am
Franco Twinkie:

So, the young Doug was fascinated with the album cover not only because the model had no shirt on, but because the puppets had such happy rubber faces?

You've pulled me into the comment bar. I have that book too!!!! Got it in 1978, I think.

this is gorgeous

Jeff Golick:

You get more bounce with Curtis Counce, another good entry in that, uh, genre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Some Marion Brown coming up!

@mic_a
Welcome aboard! I used to drool all over that book. Two books were the Bibles of my early jazz discovery. That book and Val Wilmer's As Serious as Your Life.

'morning Doug & all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
If I remember correctly, that Curtis Counce album cover (with Counce in the astronaut's suit) was also show in the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Jazz.

Here is the book I'm talking about: tinyurl.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
Doug Schulkind:

H∅wdy, coelacanth∅!
  10:36am
mic_a:

It's a surprisingly well-informed book, contrary to what you might expect.

Heh, I only got the Wilmer book this year. Haven't gotten to read it yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am
Jeff Golick:

@Doug, that'd be "Exploring the Future" by Counce. "Bounce" goes in a different direction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Ah! I knew there was a Counce cover shown in the book. Just got the wrong one in my mind.

@mic_a
Yes! It was a fine book. I was young and impressionable when I bought it new. But even then, I could tell that it was thoughtful and well done. You will dig the Wilmer book. She gained unusually intimate access to so many essential musicians of that era. She's a hero of mine.

Waldron & Brown, so perfect.

Yes, The Four Sounds - it's a lovely album - I am lucky to have the original ... The Moses Brothers appear multiple times on the Ian Bruce Huntley archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am

We're going to have to hit the archives for those under-the-weather shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Doug Schulkind:

I was hoping you'd hear that, Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am
Doug Schulkind:

@Chris Albertyn
After I purchased the album, I of course searched Electric Jive for more information on the artists.
Avatar 11:01am
Listener Gregory:

Worth mentioning that the revised Art Pepper/Chet Baker title derives from a Jimmy Heath album of the same name (Picture of Heath), and THAT album (on Xanadu) is one of the great records of its era. Heath is at his composing and playing best.

That said, I really and truly need to try and eat better. Like, for health. What's a good lunch that people eat? Open to suggestions, as the frozen burrito that is my staple ain't gonna do it anymore. Keeping in mind that I am not good in the kitchen and also lazy.
