Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from July 1, 2022 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hello Dahlings!!!
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
WR:

Mice go on the list of vermin with rats and roaches.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
WR:

We have more mice than roaches at our place. Kill several every season. End of subject.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
WR:

Very tasty Hank Jones.

Hi doctorjazz and WR!!!

Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Hello! We have had a terrible time with clothes moths that were finally traced to a wool rug. It's now in the front yard awaiting disposal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
doctorjazz:

Branford! The "hip" Marsalis! (have this album somewhere)
Avatar 7:25pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Lizzie!! Glad you solved your moth problem :0

From the same neighborhood as show tunes.

Antonia:

Kind of like the relationship between Katherine Hepburn character and Gig (?) Young in "Desk Set"--she did his math calculations and maybe wrote things for him?
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
WR:

"Le grand amour" seems such a grandiose title but it was a lovely song.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
WR:

My loss that I didn't get all of the A&M/CTI albums when they came out.

Great Betty Carter album cover!

Nether lived Betty Carter (did get to see her once), nice track, though.

This programme is divine

Love this Tarras, but trying to get the connection to the show (there was a lot of Yiddish Theater early in the 1900's, I know...)
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
WR:

Enjoying the show tune adjacent music exploration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
doctorjazz:

Missed the between sets comments (eating dinner with the show on), this Orquesta Tipica and the Tarras are a nice pair.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
WR:

That was The Bagelman Sisters singing A Vaibele A Tsnien. Reading to find out why that klezmer compilation is credited to Dave Tarras.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
doctorjazz:

And, the Bagelman Sisters changed their names to The Barry Sisters; never heard of the Bagelman's, but my mom had and loved Barry Sisters' records.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
WR:

Interesting, The Bagelman Sisters soon became known as The Barry Sisters.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
WR:

Yeah, The Barry Sisters were fairly successful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
doctorjazz:

I'm guessing crediting it (and releasing it on) a Dave Tarras collection was strictly marketing. Dave Tarras in a creator and star of early Klezmer music; most people haven't heard of the Bagelman Sisters (and I heard them as the Barry sisters, at least their albums, but had no clue). People exploring early Klezmer would be looking/listening to Tarras (Andy Statman, a current Bluegrass turned Klezmer musician, was very influenced by Tarras). Record companits do this, try to use the famous artist to sell a recording they weren't the star on (for instance, the Isley Brothers had Jimi Hendrix play with them at some point, and albums have been released with his name prominent).

My swag hasn't arrived yet. Only remember a couple of my choices, when it arrives it will be like Christmas in July or August or whenever.

I think lots of it has been sent out, hopefully you get it soon.

Loving the Christopher Lloyd Bilbao Song! Thank you!
  9:00pm
Listener Gregory:

The Bilbao song was originally sung by Bilbo Baggins. That is my best misinformation on short notice.
Avatar 9:01pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Correct. That is revealed in the Silmarillion

Rad! Thanks LG, thanks Bronwyn

Great show, Bronwyn! Especially the last 8 minutes, which I heard. I’ll catch up on the archives.
