Let the education commence... god afternoon. I'm about to go make dinner. Crabmeat and shrimp stuffed mushroom caps, Baltimore style Yat Gaw Mein and fish fry... feeling adventurous.

David Shortell:

I never got far into Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima’s multivolume saga “Kozure Ōkami” AKA “Lone Wolf and Cub”, an obvious influence of “The Mandalorian”.
Did it also influence the 1980 film “Gloria”? I don’t know if John Cassavetes read manga.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm
spodiodi:

i can hear it in Ricky Don't Lose That Number, now that you mention. cool.
hey David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm

Hi David! I don't know about Cassavetes. I enjoy the manga and the movies.

Jazz guys like to cover Beatles (there are albums of this stuff)

No, my idea is absurd. The series wasn't published in English until 1987.

Funky16Corners:

@David - That's around the time a friend was passing me baby Cart Assassin VHS dubs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm

It is kind of amazing how Japanese samurai movies ended up being borrowed for American cinema.

Havens often slows times down, to good effect. But (to me) this just doesn't move (Just Like a Woman was treated similarly, and it's fabulous).

@Doc - I have liked it but it now papers the back of my mind like so much old, peeling wallpaper. I might just need a new interpretation
🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
WR:

@3:14 @David Shortell: Connecting that film with similar Japanese material is reasonable. When reading the Wikipedia entry for Cassavetes Gloria I see:
"The Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa cited Gloria as one of his favorite films."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm

A bit like Beatles stuff, the CSN DID suffer from overexposure, and I didn't listen to either for many years. But that long avoidance of exposure has mitigated much of that overexposure fatigue, and I can listen to that stuff again (though I still don't pull it out of the track).

David Shortell:

Yes, “The Magnificent Seven” and “A Fistful of Dollars” are famous examples of westerns adapting chambara.
I also saw an American adaptation of “Rashomon” called “The Outrage”. Edward G. Robinson, Howard DaSilva and William Shatner played the storytellers and Paul Newman played the bandit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm

Rutger Hauer also remade Zatoichi at some point

I wish I could afford an original copy of "Head"... even the 1985 reissue I have is pricey. Nice touch using the sound from the movie too :)

I dubbed that from the movie way back when

Head was very psychedelic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
Funky16Corners:

@David - Madeleine Bell, I think
Avatar 3:47pm
Vincent The Soul Chef:

It was a cinematic triumph, Erica... also, a very loose biopic of their career if you watched the entire run of the series. It's definitely a top five "stop and watch whenever it's on TV" movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
doctorjazz:

Really like Biff Rose, bought one of his albums after hearing it here (liked him back in the day as well, he'd get played on FM radio, but never picked up his albums then).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm

That first Biff Rose album is one of my all time favorites. The second one is good, too. After that it kind of trails off,

Erica:

Vincent I read that it was a failure when it first came out as it alienated both the teen demographic of the series as well as the psychedelic hippie crowd the movie tried to be aimed at.
Avatar 3:51pm
Erica:

Forget the site I read that from. All I know is that Jack Nicholson (pre-Shining) helped work on Head.

was away from computer when you did you opening mic break, Larry. Deeply felt. Thoughtful program today. Giving new or more context for these tunes. 👍👍👍👍👍

Not really into biker movies Larry but I'll consider it for the future.

@Erica: All true... Head was Jack's first(?) screenplay in fact, written pretty much on the fly while he and the band were in a cypher...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
Funky16Corners:

it's not a biker movie. More of a travelogue that happens on motorcycles. No Hells Angels
Avatar 4:01pm
