Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Ronnie Spector could not be stopped from performing her Phil-powned hits in concert performance, but there is no safe harbor for repurposing as part of a theatrical presentation, as she discovered Phil was able to say "No", forcing her to drop several of her most famous tunes from her theatrical/cabaret reminiscence show.

Was in Cleveland last week, they have a lot of footage of live Beatles from the rooftop concert (large screen, good sound, was captivating). That was post Sgt Pepper, but they had simplified the music to enable live performance.

Interesting Dean on finding those. I live next to a "Little India" commercial area. Several blocks of all Indian, Pakistan, Nepal, Bengali businesses. Used to be 6 or 8 stores dedicated to DVDs and CDs and several more that had a selection. Pretty much none now, one place that has a selection of classical and devotional CDs and a couple of phone stores that have a table of stuff that has been sitting in the sun for years. I assume the market all moved online, streaming and download.
Avatar 🎭 8:21pm

@doctorj, no relaxing! Read my post!!
Avatar 🎭 8:23pm

The cut I identified as "the real deal" was the Fletcher Henderson one. That band was one of the very best large jazz bands of its time. We probably heard Coleman Hawkins on tenor. (Known as "the inventor of the tenor saxophone," for non-jazz readers.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
doctorjazz:

So sorry to read about it, LG! "Iffy stomach" generally calls for a very light diet, tea, crackers, soup/broth, rice, banana, toast, that sort of stuff. Nothing greasy, fried, spicy (generally the fun foods) for a day or so. Mylanta sometimes is helpful, generally it is just a bit of time.

Nope, it *is* on the cast album. Strange. I heard that record many times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
doctorjazz:

Fletcher Henderson was pivotal in early jazz. In addition to Coleman Hawkins, he had different jazz stars come through the orchestra, including Louis Armstrong (who's said to have left Henderson because he wouldn't allow Louis to sing-what an error), Roy Eldridge, Benny Carter, Henry "Red" Allen, Doc Cheatham, and many others, and pioneered the sound of big band jazz. He later went on (when his band folded, he wasn't a star) to arrange for Benny Goodman.

My wife received a text this afternoon from the New Jersey Dept of Health, warning her that her phone was noted to be near the phone of someone who tested positive for COVID for 15 or more minutes, so likely she was exposed. That's it; no information on when or where it happened, for instance. She's fine, and tested negative, but doesn't recall if she ever signed up for these warnings (I didn't get one). It's a bit creepy...
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
WR:

Sorry guys, by the time that Henderson recording was made, Coleman Hawkins was no longer in the band. Was Ben Webster on tenor, no slouch Mr. Webster. Gonna go all Stork on yas.

Thanks for the info, WR. Agreed that little is lost when you add Ben Webster to your band, no matter who he's replacing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
doctorjazz:

Nice, WR; good Storking!
By the late 30's, Hawkins was already a star (he had a jukebox hit in 1939). Ben Webster was a good replacement choice, as, early on, he was very much influenced by and sounding like Coleman Hawkins (though later on his sound mellowed and smoothed over, and would never be confused for Hawkins).
