A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

"Thirty years after The Firesign Theatre’s historic Dear Friends broadcasts, XM Satellite Radio offered the quartet a chance to gather around the microphones once again for a monthly two-hour show in 2001-2002.

Performed live on the satellite to an unknown, but certainly small audience, Fools in Space combined newly-written comedy sketches, new episodes of serial classics Nick Danger and Mark Time, and lots of riff-tacular open space for politics and the news of the day, Firesign-style."

There was a great story in the pre-Murdoch Wall Street Journal about the first film screening in post-Taliban Afghanistan. Someone found a Bollywood print and someone else scrounged up a 16mm projector. The audience was exclusively grizzled mujahideen fighters, and when the first kiss was shown everyone whooped and fired their Kalishnikov rifles in the air.

Another thing that compelled me to track down this comp again: the images on its Discogs entry have sucked for many years so I scanned the CD art and posted them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

bless you for scanning things, Rich

Just classic Irish teeth, Taylor. Not as nasty as Shane MacGowan before implants, but getting there. Lookin' like the hillbilly I am!

i remember reading somewhere that Elvis Costello paid for Shane MacGowan's new teeth, but then I confused the story with Joe Stummer's teeth.

My son used to make me play this in the car often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
MHLee:

I wasn't alive when this released... lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Rich in Washington:

They only released one 12" and a cassette (with this track on it) which is fetching a pretty penny now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
MHLee:

Cassettes are back in style though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
MHLee:

Dungeonsynth and some metal genres basically exclusively release through them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Rich in Washington:

I love this track too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
MHLee:

We are currently sorting through thousands of CDs at the college station because we moved buildings and there's some wonderful punk DIY releases
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Rich in Washington:

I still buy lots of cassettes but they're too tricky to play live on the air. I usually rip them (or download) and play them digitally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
Rich in Washington:

Maybe when I get around to getting my pro deck running again and putting it in my setup I might play cassette live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm

We have two Thai places in town which is odd
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
MHLee:

Considering where we are
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Rich in Washington:

We have tons but the one we go to has been around since the early 70s. Run by a really nice family. The best tom kha gai in town, as far as I'm concerned. They also make some nice Northern type dishes that I dont' see the newer places offer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Zipperhead7:

Since the market for Chinese restaurants is saturated in NYC, more taquerias are opening up. I went to one recently, and if you bought more than $20 they gave you a free won ton soup.

Rich - is that Thai Little Home?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes, it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm

There's also a nice Vietnamese noodle place about a block from there called Pho Hong Phat that's really good. It's also been there since the 70s. Really run down but good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
MHLee:

I've heard that a new gen of Chinese restaurants that is more authentic is popping up but we still just have the old style ones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Rich in Washington:

Old school Chinese places are disappearing in my town and being replaced either by hipstery 'Fusion' cuisine places but we have a couple of those more authentic places like you mention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
MHLee:

I don't even understand how the old school ones exist in such a high quantity,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hi Rich! Hipstery fusion - that's a back handed description if I ever heard one., But I know exactly what you're talking about. They're usually twice as expensive and half as good.

I think the old school Chinese restaurant thing was a boomer holdover. This crap Chinese place kept getting voted #1 by our dumb newspaper year after year.

That's a good one Irony. They use to be down the street, but they moved.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

Back about a decade ago, a group of friends would gather for Chinese banquets in Chinatown in NYC curated by a friend who was an aficionado. Menus were in Chinese. Our friend selected a dozen courses for us to savor.

Sadly, the pandemic and gentrification have obliterated Chinatown. I heard some of the restaurants moved to Queens.

Strangely, L.A. still manages to keep a lot of it's crappy charm. It's so damn big that the people who ruin stuff are usually focused on the 'nice' parts of town. That leaves about 90% left untouched. South El Monte has great Chinese restaurants.
