Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from June 3, 2022 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Everyone in NYC has their last day of school at the end of June. Meanwhile, in the rest of the country, it's already summer vacation. The only solace is that while everyone else goes back to school in August when it's still 90-100 degrees outside, NYC enjoys summer vacation and then goes back as the weather cools down.

It's awful now. Where I grew up, a couple of parents went on a tear recently about their children being taught by "hippie witches." Public education, like public housing and public transportation, increasingly is viewed as a means of last resort. Teachers are truly underappreciated. I used to assign students to write about a media artifact that really altered their worldview, and if they cited a teacher or class I told them they needed to send that teacher a note about it

Dean, reading your perverse involvement with your senior prom reminds me of my own illogical behavior back then. My friend Mary who was an 'It Girl' and had many guys clamoring for her attention was hinting heavily that she wanted me to take her. I shut her down cruelly so it was not mentioned again. I've played plenty of rugby and coached kids a lot in American football (and played it informally, no pads), and although rugby is enjoyable, it's not for every kid; there are some types who'd be better and have more fun at American football. Even if a high proportion of NFL players develop brain damage, they're not representative of football players generally. The younger the players, the safer the game gets. (Probably true of rugby as well.)

Yes, the respective games do have those characteristics. American and Canadian football are very much coaches' games to a degree no other games are. But there are kids who very much take to that sort of thing. You practice much more time than you play, which is very rare in sports generally excepting ones like parachuting, sea diving, etc. where a lot of safety procedures need to be practiced.

The thing is, with American Football there is no way to make the game safe for kids or adults. The pads and helmet increase the forces generated during contact and will harm your brain - no if ands or buts. The the football mentality is to grit yer teeth and keep playing even with a head injury

@Franco @2:01 I have a pretty good idea why I acted that way. I was a nerdy little kid in a working class neighborhood who got picked on a lot most of my school life. I always had my nose in a book, and my extremities were disproportional (I wore size 13s while I was still under 5 ft tall) so I was a klutz athletically. I got my growth spurt starting the end of my Junior year and went from 5'2" 100 lbs at the beginning of my Junior year to 6'5 180 before my Freshman year of college. When I grew into my hands and feet, I got a lot more coordinated, started excelling in sports, and was tall enough no one would fuck with me. On the bike front, a while ago I picked up an older GT Palomar (rigid fork) for my bride to ride around the neighborhood. It weighs a ton, but we're pretty flat so it should be fine for her. Paid around $10 at a church thrift shop. Every unpainted steel component had a nice coating of rust, the cobwebs were real and still functioning; overall, it looked like it hadn't been ridden since there was peace in the Middle East. Anyway, a few minutes ago, I finally put it on the stand, threw some lube on it, and tested it -- the front derailleur needs like one turn to be perfect, all rear gears work perfectly, brakes are perfect, one wheel was a little out of true that only needed three minor tweaks to get it back in line. One of the tubes is still holding air, though I'm replacing it anyway. I can't load and unload my Scott from the truck bed without needing more...
