Today: Jeff Deutsch, author, "In Praise of Good Bookstores"

Jeff Deutsch is the director of Chicago’s Seminary Co-op Bookstores, which in 2019 he helped incorporate as the first not-for-profit bookstore whose mission is bookselling.

In Praise of Good Bookstores, by Jeff Deutsch

• Jeff Deutsch on reading (p. 132): “Engagement with [books] provokes an internal dialogue, a shuffling of hunches, assumptions, and prejudices, bringing texture and insight to the far reaches of our ignorance. The ability to question our own beliefs, to dwell in uncertainty, empathy, or curiosity, to pursue knowledge, beauty, and meaning unstintingly, so that we might make our best attempt at understanding, and to continually put ourselves in spaces that will challenge, not just echo, our assumptions, is an act of citizenship as much as its own individual reward.”

• Jeff Deutsch's vision (p. 160): “My hope is that we, this society struggling to be born, will recall the most important debts – those debts beyond the currency of the banks and financiers – and acquit ourselves of them by building models and systems that allow the gifts we have received, and those we create, to subsequently pass to the next generation.”

Also a Poet: Frank O'Hara, My Father, and Me, by Ada Calhoun

Aftermath, by Preti Taneja, published by Transit Books

• John Ruskin, in Sesame and Lilies: “For all books are divisible into two classes: the books of the hour, and the books of all time. Mark this distinction – it is not one of quality only. It is not merely the bad book that does not last, and the good one that does. It is a distinction of species. There are good books for the hour, and good ones for all time; bad books for the hour, and bad ones for all time.” (Pictured on the playlist: this quote’s bronze plaque from the New York Public Library’s Library Way on East 41st Street. I know plenty of good bookstores, many of which are by now long gone. But one started in Portland just before the pandemic, and it has managed to survive: Melville Books on NE Alberta. It's a tiny, carefully tended used book shop. The name is not an allusion to Moby Dick. It is in fact the proprietor's name. If Powell's is like the Louvre, requiring several hours of browsing, Melville is like the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, manageable but not exhausted in an afternoon.

@Jeff Moore: "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

One of the best things I love about a good bookstore is that you can hang out with no expectation of having to buy things. Bluestockings on the lower east side has always been a haven for queers, radicals and all sorts of locals for just this reason, and they sell locally made zines and art and host some great events too. I used to volunteer there but now they are entirely run as a worker cooperative. So glad it’s still around!

There’s so many small book stores in Brooklyn now. Mil Mundos was founded by a former Bluestockings worker and has a lot of rad stuff in Spanish. Molasses has books, a cafe AND alcohol.

@marciB I’m also in W Queens and it’s the bane of my existence having been a resident here for almost 30 years that there has not been one used bookstore!!

Also, someone said Bluestockings is back? Looked for it a few months ago and it want there. Though in a weird serendipity found some temporary small outpost in Alphabet City that they were situated though completely pared down.

Castor, I remember buying a book called San Francisco Night in the mid 80's there that my sister lost in her trash heap of a house. The bookstore was next to a biker store called The Pit. I still have my patches I bought there. I wisely didn't lend them to my sister.

Many thanks, Mark! This was a real gift. As so many Techtonic episodes are. Thanks so much for the conversation and for stressing how we experience time as subject to human choice when we can disconnect from the machine enough to remember our own agency.

Stay disconnected, friends!
