Hi there! Going live at the top of the hour!

To mesh with your Shanghai Shuffle theme, I'm reading a memoir by Si-lan Chen Leyda.

I know of a doo-wop song written by a Chinese Trinidader
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
Jan Turkenburg:

Sounds intriguing, WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am

I also know after the Chinese Exclusion Act a bunch of Chinese immigrated to China (hence the Cuban Chinese restaurant) I wonder if that was true for other Caribbean Isles

I've always wanted to go to a Cuban Chinese place but there aren't very many left. I think there are a few in New York.

Hi chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
fred:

Hello Jan and all. Holiday here, so easier for me to comment. I bought my first batch of contemporary dance tickets for next year. The big one comes in June, only bought 18. Should have been 19, but one threatened to involve audience members
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hello fred! You had me laughing out loud there :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am
fred:

@chresti: did you catch Vicki's show?

Chrestikins! Fred. Ahoy.
  Swag For Life Member 10:29am
WR:

Hello fred, David (iL), chresti, MHLee.

In addition to Cuban Chinese there are Equador or Peru Chinese places.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am
David (in London):

WR, salutations!

chresti - in Frisco:

Hi fred, I went to the Vicki Bennet presentation last night. It was the first event I’ve attended in over 2 years
  Swag For Life Member 10:30am
WR:

Also Indian Chinese places.
  Swag For Life Member 10:33am
WR:

That's great chresti! I started following Vicki via patreon and bandcamp, saw the notices about the several USA west coast events.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am
fred:

@chresti:I hope you liked it. I'm cursed on that front: first time I should have seen her work she got sick and had to cancel (in before times), second time there was a fire in the theater. She made do with a screening in an artist space, but it wasn't right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am
Rich in Washington:

Nice, chresti! Didja get to say hi to Vicki?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hey Rich!
  Swag For Life Member 10:40am
WR:

One more comment about the Si-lan Chen memoir, she and her siblings joined her father in China but soon after, as the Chinese independence movement splintered, moved to Russia and were there, mostly in Moscow, for the 1930s. Nearly every paragraph sends me down Wikipedia rabbit holes finding out more about the events and people she mentions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am
Rich in Washington:

Hi Jan! Splendid show you've got going on here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am
Jan Turkenburg:

thank you!
  Swag For Life Member 10:45am
WR:

In contrast to the exoticism in the Japanese Sandman series, in the tunes with Shanghai in the title I hear little except an occasional extra cymbal strike to differ from usual foxtrot / swing tunes of their time.
  Swag For Life Member 10:55am
WR:

Oh, you got the files via soulseek. Thank you for the update on this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
Jan Turkenburg:

Initially I did. I downloaded them over a period of months over 10 years ago. These days I also use other sources. i've extended my CD-collection and I also look on archive.org. The more scratchy recordings are usually from archive.org. Over half of the material still comes from Cees van Beek's collection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am
Jan Turkenburg:

I only go on soulseek occasionally now, but I see there are people that are still sharing Cees' collection, but seldom completely. You can recognise the files by the unusual 160 bitrate, which would be a problem with modern recordings, but works well with these oldies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
fred:

Someday there will be a show here where people discuss the aberration that was the mp3 era. Maybe that mangled sound will define our times

  Swag For Life Member 11:10am

WFMU streaming is mostly 128K mp3 so the abberation continues.

Maybe that will be solved when quantum internet arrives.

Sez Wikipedia: ""Shanghai Lil", featuring Cagney and Ruby Keeler dancing together." so I would guess if Keeler is dancing that she would be singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am
Rich in Washington:

160 mono is like 320 stereo. Plus the frequency range of old recordings is rather narrow.
@fred: at times I feel like the debate is lost on people using Spootify, Yootoob, etc. to DJ with, with resulting bitcrunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
Jan Turkenburg:

Ah, thanks! I already guessed that Ruby Keeler was the most likely suspect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am
David (in London):

Dig those Bob Cats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am

A former coworker would only read actual books through her iPad's camera because it looked better that way. She also said live music sounded bad, she'd rather hear the show later from apple

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Ursula1000!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
fred:

@MHLee: depends on your goal. For long-term archival, FLAC is riskier with not that great space savings compared to PCM. If you're listening in a noisy place, mp3 is good enough (except for noise or percussion heavy music). I like FLAC conceptually, but the useful cases are rather rare
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am

I usually download in mp3-320 but I rip in wav from cds and flac from record

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
fred:

@MHLee: FLAC and wav are the same, as long as FLAC decoders are maintained (small community, so that could be an issue). mp3-320 is good enough for some uses, but the loss can't be reversed, so it depends on your goal
