The early 20th c. obsession with Hawaiian-style music (if not authentic tunes) demonstrates the weird confluence of imperialism and pop culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am
Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, Chris Albertyn!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am
Doug Schulkind:

The prominence of steel guitar in early Hawaiian recorded music is thanks largely to the sizable Puerto Rican population that was shipped to the tropics to help with the cane sugar harvests. They brought the instrument with them.

So the cultural imperialism is double then!

Oh my god. Ogun Records! Almost certainly my desert island record label. Founded by South African bassist Harry Miller and his wife Hazel. Captured legendary and historic performances by the cream of the crop of the South African ex-pats in Europe, along with crucial sessions by key European improvisers. Massive massive massive sounds. Each Ogun release is more astonishing than the next.

re. Wildwood. I picked up that book on a few occasions, skimmed it and was intrigued but was unsure that it would connect with my kids.
