@Jameson57 3:33: Had to reboot totally before replying; I've done too darn much researching and typing on this laptop this week. Anyway -- Jon Anderson and Vangelis were tight, yes. Jon was moving in a more newagey and less rocky direction in the later 70s; see Anderson's 75 solo album Olias of Sunhillow. -- That's really what broke Yes up the first time. Howe and Squire wanted rock, Jon and Wakeman were going more newagey. The "Paris sessions" bootleg Yes material shows how newagey Jon's material was getting to be, and the Paris album sessions broke up over the resulting 'artistic differences,' also partly because White hurt himself skateboarding or something. Wakeman did a ton of newagey records in the 80s, partly because he always overspent his income and got divorced, needed fast money, and new age was a category that sold in the 80s.

@Jameson57: "(I am/was a a hard core Yes fan)." -- Moi aussi, though there is certainly a ton of various interesting music out there. I was pretty networked in with hardcore Yes fans, especially in the 90s and early 00s when the internet was young -- probably have 300+ traded-for live-show CDs, "ROIOs" as we called them ("recordings of indeterminate origin" -- which wasn't actually always the truth, but sounded better than bootlegs) -- dating back as far as the late 60s. The band and management said "tape trading" (as it was still anachronistically called then) was fine with them, as long as we also bought their commercially released product. Big of them haha

Martina Bertoni what a beautiful piece. I have the luminous Sylvia Sidney on in the background and it matches perfectly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
G:

@Carmichael: Yes's new material released in the 2010s is not overwhelming, really. The Ladder and Magnification (late 90s/early 00s) are very solid. But they are mainly a band that makes money touring now, so their sets are for 70s fans, primarily.

In recent years they have started doing tours where they play entire 1970s albums in running order. They do change major instrumental solos up pretty interestingly from tour to tour, perhaps partly to avoid boredom.

We saw Mulholland Drive at the Chelsea movie theater. Was it that long ago?

Word, Rich. This is great.
  4:50pm
Marie:

I thought Mulholland Drive was like an amazing capturing or creation of a momentous and almost divine dream that had its own internal logic

Miss G:

HH, the last time the film came up here, I looked it up. We were at the WFMU record fair in that month. I have a lot of photos from that month. You know how the Village East is kind of like the theater at the end of MH? The two girls were watching "Llorando" and holding hands and crying and it was so scary I held his hand and began crying and I though I was in the movie and well. (this memory courtesy of Joanna Matteray I think!)

Way I put it is Lynch is always about how Surrealism relates to Narrative. But, he does it differently in each of his Works, depending on the demands of it. I thot the big twist in perspective in MulhollandDrive was a pretty neat cinematic trick. & from what I understand (which may be limited) - it was kinda repurposed from a TV pilot ?! So that even may have been from necessity! Anyhow...
  4:56pm
Marie:

Hey Handy, I was happy to meet K8 at the WFMU meetup at Mama Tried a couple of weeks ago. To me, Lynch is a highly gifted artist and one of my fave directors of all time

@RR63--I'm not surprised. Some of the best art seems to come from having structures--they're like a bonus. Lars Von Trier is so interesting in his embrace of them.

Afternoon, Slug!
Loving the foley-centric vibe of this set
  5:00pm
Marie:

Hey, not a big difference in meaning I guess but I meant to type "strictures" instead of "structures" above @)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
Handy Haversack:

Hi, Marie! I posted a note to you last week or so, but I think you had popped out already. K8 had a great time meeting you too! I wish I'd been able to make it. We're actually on our way to Mama Tried in half an hour or so because K8's got a gig there tonight -- in case you're free!

I love Lynch, too. I really like Mulholland Drive but thought and think it covered a lot of the same existential ground that Lost Highway already had but without LH's sense of humor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Handy interesting. MHs tone is not happy that is true.
  5:04pm
Marie:

Hey Handy! Yes, I really enjoyed talking to her. You guys are so nice and cool @) Oh, yeah, wow, I would like to go but I am committed to getting some painting done today--though maybe I will impulsively drop that! I need to see Lost Highway again--I think I was drunk (like an idiot) when I first saw that @)

I hope to meet up with you in person sometime too. I'm really hoping Michele has a meetup.

Ike:

Really wanted that first 90 minutes of Mulholland Drive to be a TV series like it was originally supposed to be. I love it, but the last segment, filmed later in order to transform it from a TV pilot into a movie, is not quite as good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
Ike:

*to be the first episode of a TV series

Miss G:

Thank you Peter Jay Mick upstairs packing up my STF tee shirt! ;-) HH, ah, today's the day! You and K8 and Creek and Kills and the other bands and fans have a GREAT time! Wish I were there!
  5:06pm
Marie:

You know, I am glad that when I saw it, I did not know that it was originally supposed to be a TV show. So interesting--I would like to see it again soon now.
Avatar 5:06pm
ChukAmok:

That TV series was meant to be a Twin Peaks spin-off centered around the Audrey Horne character, correct?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Miss G! Sun has come out, Brooklyn's warming up a bit. Should be a real nice night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Right. I neither knew it was a 'Frankenstein' going in - nor have I even now seen LostHighway to compare. So the thing pivots & I just go - Woh! ...also, spoke to my own not entirely happy experience of SoCal, as I've said. So it was even a notable success in my ledger...

A little late to the party, but I immediately recognized the beginning of "Loud, Loud, Loud" because it was sampled on Del the Funky Homosapien's Deltron 3030!
