A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

This one should be a lot of fun, for people who like the old tape trading scene from the 80's, and other fun post-punk stuff.

Austin The Boss! There, i have just bequeathed upon you a new nickname.

Mr. X:

My brother had a dubbing deck. I always had to borrow his cassette deck to make tapes.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
Austin Rich:

My mom had a nice stereo, and a huge record collection. So I just bought tapes and recorded the radio and her records. Tapes were my gateway to music for most of my life.
Avatar 9:08pm
Mr. X:

My walkman got stolen from my band's house while we were downstairs in the basement practicing. But it was obvious who was upstairs at the time, so we went to his house, and his girlfriend made him give it back to me.
Avatar 9:08pm
Mr. X:

I couldn't really get people to trade for my mixtapes. So I just left them places.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Austin Rich:

I burned through so many walkmen. Lost them, broke them, wore them out, had them stolen from me. But I was never without one, pretty much from 1993 on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Krys O.:

My ex, R. Stevie Moore sold tapes by the score. We amassed tons of cassettes. I still have a bunch.

I had hundreds of cassettes stolen off me, sadly. I can't dwell too long on what I've lost or had taken away. I'd go bonkers.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Austin Rich:

I do love R. Stevie's music. I was courting him for an interview for a while, but it never happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Krys O.:

Really, Austin? Around when?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Austin Rich:

This interview that I'm editing for this presentation was recorded and filmed by William for his production company, and was "aired" on a short-lived (and little-heard) podcast that I ran back in 2018. But this edit and presentation is new to this show.

The original interview, uncut (and much, MUCH longer) is here:

@Krys: three or four years ago? The e-mails sort of dried up, so I assumed that he was busy or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Krys O.:

Ah, I see. We were together from 1987 until 2010.

Digging this show before I toddle off to sleep.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm

We don't really get to talking about it in any more depth than this, so I'll mention here: You can find William's films here:

vimeo.com...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Austin Rich:

As mentioned: in addition to his autism activism and similar documentaries, he also have films about musicians, tape trading, 'zines culture, etc. His films are great. (And not just because I'm in a couple.)
Avatar 9:21pm

I took a paste-up and layout class just a few months before the Mac came out and changed everything.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Austin Rich:

What did Lee Ving say? "We're from Frisco, man!"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Austin Rich:

I wanted a Mac early on, for layout / zine reasons. I was on the newspaper staff in school, and the teacher used a Mac to do all the design / layout. I immediately understood what that meant for zine making, and wanted one.

HyperDose:

This album was only available on a french label, and was hard to get for most of the 90's and 2000's. Now you can get it directly from the Problemist Bandcamp page... and the money actually goes to William!

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Austin Rich:

I have video of this performance, too. It needs some editing, which I haven't had a chance to do. (And the audio needs to be swapped out with a higher quality recording.) But that's a project for another day.
Avatar 9:50pm
Geoff-U:

Thanks Austin. I'm OK as is Michelle, just adjusting to the new reality. Her dad put up one hell of a fight. He is free now.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Austin Rich:

Historic Problemist shows were often solo, but when possible, William would recruit a band. (Usually drums and a bass player.) Chris Rankin and David I think were the most common players, but I think they went through a lot of drummers.

However, all reports suggest that the later phase of The Problemist, when it was William solo in the later part of the '80's, where the most incredible, and the most wild. That's the era I would have loved to see.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Austin Rich:

Still, it was a lot of fun to see this performance. Which was to me, and several people all there for dinner, and not for the music.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Austin Rich:

@Geoff-U: that's a really good way of seeing it.
Avatar 9:53pm
Mr. X:

The Space had good food. They may have had small audiences, but they were very appreciative.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Austin Rich:

The Space has sort of evolved, and combined with The Capital Theater, to create The Infinity Room, which now hosts music and comedy here in town. So we lost two businesses and gained a new one.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
Austin Rich:

(And as I understand it: the food at The Infinity Room is a little better than it was at The Space, so they have that going for them.)
Avatar 9:56pm
Mr. X:

That explains why I have the Infinity Room in my fb newsfeed.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
Austin Rich:

I have yet to go inside The Infinity Room, so I'm largely going on what I've heard. But The Mid-Valley is small, so I assume I can trust the gossip network would have gotten back to me by now if there was something to gossip about. So far, all I hear is good things about the food.

Mr. X:

So is Nate from Eugene? Didn't you work at William's autism center in Eugene for a while, Austin?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Austin Rich:

I did work with William for quite a while, both at Autism House and just personally. (We recorded a TON of music in that practice space.) But gas prices, and then the pandemic, sort of put an end to that.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Austin Rich:

William and I were going to try and play some festivals, and go on a Problemist tour. But, again: Pandemic.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Austin Rich:

I'm not sure where Nate is from, per se. But I'm guessing either Eugene / Springfield.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Austin Rich:

I'm pretty sure Cathead had a song with a riff that went exactly like this. But we never recorded it.

And they play it better.
Avatar 10:23pm
Mr. X:

Reminds me of some King Missile tunes. Like "Detachable Penis."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Austin Rich:

There's usually a little overlap between "teenage / early 20's punk songs" and King Missile, certainly.
Avatar 10:26pm
Mr. X:

Hear here, Nate. So much of it is overproduced, too perfect.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm

(This is even funnier, because Nate takes classes from William. William is his teacher. And William plays on the song.)

I heard that William would like to make a movie about MDC, if possible. Perhaps that's in the works?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Austin Rich:

I forgot that William's nephew was in The Ataris. I never saw them, but I remember they were on almost every comp back in the day.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Austin Rich:

I didn't include it in this part of the conversation (and the song is on the album) but Nate is a big Nirvana fan, too. So there's a Nirvana cover on the album. And it's really good.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

I did not look into Skullburger, so I cannot speak to the quality, or what it sounds like.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

And as the punks would say: Fuck it. Let's go long.

Thanks @WR! I recommend seeking out the back issues of "Unsound" magazine, which I believe William has for sale somewhere. They are a treasure trove of post-punk, industrial and experimental music from the 80's that I find endlessly fascinating. (And there's some acts written about in there that I've never seen anywhere else.)
