Favoriting May 25, 2022: From Mahraganat to Shaabi with special guest Andrew Simon
An audio tour of Simon’s new book Media of the Masses: Cassette Culture in Modern Egypt. Simon joins the broadcast to explore how Cairo street music mahraganat—and the official attempts to censor it—began decades earlier with shaabi, a form of folk music from northern Egypt, popular on cassette.

I told a story on another show about how I had a wonderful cassette of early fusion of jazz and Indian music, which after I while I felt used some very strange scales. Eventually I realized that the tape was stretching each time I played it, and the notes got slightly flatter with each playing. That is the problem with cassettes.

PaulRobeson1922:

@Rev Rabbit: The 13 part documentary is Ok. It’s good to gain a surface level understanding of the American involvement in the Vietnam War… but burns does not cover Hué in enough detail and the tone of the film lacks moral clarity… the war was profoundly immoral from the start. Ken Burns does not take a strong moral stance in the film.

There is a perfumed river in Hué & a mass grave in the strawberry patch there. Why? Ken burns tells you how but has little to say about why why why

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@PaulR: We've had this convo before. I think Burns' task was to give exposition to the entire History & all events - & in so doing did not spare any Administration exposition of its self-deceptions or lies - broadly. I think it was quite clear & skillful in this.
  9:43pm
headcleaner:

Moralization is overrated. Better to inform. And in appropriate contexts, indict. (Which seems to overlap with moralization, but is quite different)

Google translates Duniya Gharura as "Arrogant World"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
PaulRobeson1922:

@Rev Rabbit: yes we have.

Burn’s Civil war coversge is much better. Did you notice Burns connect Racism at home to racism abroad? He told a tale of the Vietnam War without a moral high ground.

He failed in his retelling of the war for this reason. The Vietnam war, everyday it went on, was profoundly immoral and the film does not stress this clearly

...I certainly didn't get the impression Burns was trying to paint it as anything but a vast mistake. Did he give enuff emphasis to war crimes & horrors in proportion to, say, military strategies ? Might be a valid question. His task here was of course immense & hugely freighted. Think I'm leaning towards headcleaner on this one maybe...

@Rev: a sober exposition on Nazism stresses the profoundly immoral nature of Murder of unpunished murder… Vietnam was Unpunished murder everyday… do u understand that?

One of the lessons born out of WWII is that it is our humanity that is capable of these acts… Nixon did not learn any lessons… hippies would critique Nixon as “a little fucking hitler”

PaulR - I suppose every War - or even preparing for War - is that. I think Vietnam being the festering sore in U.S.American politics, foreign ploicy & self-identity for decades - Burns probly saw the shortest line between two points of healing being exposition of factual History. I mean - I certainly learned from it. McNamara was neither spared nor misrepresented in this effort.
