Interesting science fact. Per cubic meter (or foot or whatever you prefer), the energy produced by the Sun is less than the energy produced by a compost heap. The nuclear reactions are not happening at a very high rate, mostly the atoms avoid each other, the reactions are rare. It's only because the Sun is SO HUGE that it puts out such a high total energy flux.

@YETI: I once brought a package wrapped tightly in plastic to a biology class at Columbia, and had the students pass it around without knowing what it was. They all noticed that the package was warm to the touch, it was generating heat, like a little box with a warm furry kitten in it. Then I told them what it was: a loaf of bread that I had brought home, put away, and forgotten about. The heat was being produced by the metabolic activity of the mold that was growing on the bread.

Danny Hock - NYT article:
"Assault on the Gentrifiers, and the Audience"
"Mr. Hoch (pronounced hock) broke out in 1994 with “Some People,” in which he played, among other characters, a young Latina who is offended by her boyfriend’s suggestion that they use a condom, a Puerto Rican man whose teenage son was shot and killed by the police, and a middle-aged Jewish woman (loosely based on his mother) who worries about her do-gooder son working in the South Bronx. “Some People” won an Obie. It was followed by another one-man show, “Jails, Hospitals and Hip-Hop,” which had its premiere in 1997 at Berkeley Repertory Theater in California (where “Taking Over” was produced earlier this year) and had a run at the Public in 1998...."

I sat underneath and an actual taxidermied elephant head yesterday. It was intensely creepy. The room was huge and entirely paneled in mahogany. There was a sailing ship plated in gold as an ornament. So ... there are some very wrong-ass people out there, Franco!
