Heard just the last portion of a radio piece on Mingus yesterday, in which he described a childhood utterly without parental love, attention or guidance. Quite sad. SOp and doug, I speculate, maybe those aspects of him fit together. His radical act of self-creation a re-creation. That in a way he was always re-recording the bass part, destroying and remaking an unsatisfactory beginning.

There was a ton of Phil Schaap rebroadcasts embedded in WKCR's Bach Fest back during Xmas. If you ask me (didn't someone ask me?!) I think it's a terrible programming decision. Hearing Phil warble from the grave is not a good look.

There is a movie about young person who grew up with the slowed down cumbia music, he leaves and tries to make it in NYC and doesn't work out and returned to his home town, having been sustained by memories of the music and dancing with his friends, only to find out that the scene has moved on. Sorry can't recall the movie title. I was surprised that the Analog reissue didn't mention it.

The (white, mid-western) poet William Matthews writes about meeting Mingus when he was a college kid, and showing him a poem. Mingus is amiable with the kid, then fires his pianist in mid-set.

There's a Mingus-appropriate bingo in today's spelling bee. You'll know it when you see it.

@doctorj & Doug (from wayback), I think WKCR handled the pandemic rather poorly. I used to listen to the Classical shows (and a bit of Schaap) in the mornings, but they turned into a lot of repeated pre-recorded shows that people did from home. I would turn it on and realize after a while that I had heard the identical show last week. It was disappointing.

@Spelling Beings: It's kind of a tedious game, but the pangrams are fun - better when there's more than one - but when they have cheap endings like "ed", it's kind of a slog. When the pandemic hit, the WKCR djs, Kurtz and all, kept going into the studio and being there for their listeners until the university locked them out. When that happened, they lacked the authority, the technology, the expertise, the money, or, maybe most important, the community to keep doing it live, the way this station did. I'd like to think they did what they could. It's sad, but it's also a testament to how great this place is. I hope they find a way to make it new.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Doug Schulkind:

@Mx. Baba Bee
Yes! There will be much sacrilege to be flaunted by all!
Avatar 10:32am
Listener Gregory:

There have been a number of solo bass albums put out recently (probably a pandemic effect). One is on ECM by Mark Johnson. Very nice, but a somewhat straight-ahead affair (trigger warning to @Jeff G!). Another is by Barre Phillips on Victo, two solo concerts 30 years apart. I enjoyed that, and probably more acceptable to Jeff.
Avatar 10:33am
Listener Gregory:

@adamdoesit, my sense is that WKCR is really not supported by Columbia, which makes things very difficult for them, as they are not a community station either.

That is a kind and humane way to frame the situation at WKCR. It hadn't considered their over-reliance on playing old Phil Schaap archives was really more a way to fill airtime during a lockdown than a way to keep a resurrected Schaap in constant public view.

I believe Schapp's shows are archived (have to check, could be wrong but I think he got the college students to do the tech stuff for him to archive). I don't think there are other archives (on the site, they list "playlists", but not archives). Phil had his own site where he sold stuff, I think his archives may be there.
And they're always pitching for money, sometimes they used to plead that they were really broke-Columbia set them free (I believe Schapp had to do with that), for good and bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am

@Webhamster Henry
I'm guessing WKCR is sitting on decades of Schaap archives.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:45am

(I'm generally a believer that most bass solos are extraneous, most shows could do without them; these are great! But there aren't that many bassists that can pull them off. Saw Redmen, Mehldau, McBride, Blade at town hall this past Tuesday-Christian McBride is an amazing bassist, can pull it off.)
Apologies, Doug, I missed that announcement! (and the set would be great anyway, was teasing).

Just read of Mingus' firing by Ellington after confrontation with Tizol. Knife? Fire axe?! Slurs? The detail by detail accounts differ, but Duke's actual delivery of the dismissal seems to have revved up the calming sarcastic smoooooothness. And the story includes a bass vs. cello remark that might've incited.

@doctorj, there used to be archives at Schaap's website, but I just looked now and there's no sign of them. Furthermore, all the commercial items are listed as sold out, which doesn't seem possible. So, I'm guessing the site is on lockdown pending resolution of his estate or something. Maybe WKCR would like to control the archives and make them available permanently? That would be nice.

@LG, haven't been to the Schapp Site in quite a while, I do recall that they were there (with autographed CD's for sale, program notes from WKCR Birthday Broadcasts, and similar). Likely there is some issue over control over broadcasts done over WKCR.

Haden is an interesting bassist-I don't think he'd claim his technique is up there with the best (like McBride, Scott LaFaro), but, on the other hand, he created a style of "free" bass playing, and his soul always jumped out of his music.
