Who crashed whose stage, I wanna know. You'd think it was Lou guesting given the IN location, but then it makes more sense to be headlining and pull the local hero.

JCM’s “Save Some Time To Dream” from a decade or so ago sounds like he has the VU supporting him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

I wish there was a recording of the John Prine set too, rw. According to the label, no known recording exists...for all we know Lou and JCM went up with him too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Sam Segal:

Woah, now you've got me curious about that JCM record, LD. I've barely listened to any of his music. Worth digging into him?

He’s not really my bag, Sam, but that track (haven’t heard the album, alas) is definitely a curio and worth hearing - it’s more “Sweet Jane” than “White Light White Heat” btw

I know, I'm impressed by it too, zzz. Everything I've checked out from them has been gold. Excited to see what they dig up next. I have another track from one of their upcoming releases later in the show. I think you'll like it.

Bill Frisell guitar
Ches Smith drums, vibes

Sam, have you ever heard The Happy Valley Band Organvm PERCEPTVS? Just found it in my rack (sitting there a while), mix of mp3s manipulated, live musicians, thought you might (Kurt Gottschalk wrote notes on it)

WR:

Hello Sam, drummer streamer, +1 like on the Ches Smith recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Sam Segal:

I have heard that album, Doc. Incredibly creative music. I love the version of "Like A Prayer."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Sam Segal:

Welcome, WR! Glad you dug it. The Ches Smith album has a beautiful cover from Raymond Pettibon as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm

I love it too, figured it would be up your alley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
drowsy:

I have read the first paragraphs of Vol 1 about ninety times, and then I reflect on that and need to put it down and start again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Sam Segal:

Those are some heavy paragraphs! I started Vol. 1 a couple of times over the years before finally getting hooked myself.
  11:29pm
headcleaner:

I bet the Marlboro man must have been a Norwegian. Staring down all those wild horses. And cancer risk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Sam Segal:

A funny thing about Knausgaard is that he seems to really dislike when people go, "Oh you're from Norway? I love Norwegian Jazz." He's brought that up multiple times in the first two volumes.
  11:29pm
Little Danny:

This is gorgeous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Sam Segal:

I really dig everything I've heard from Christian Wallumrød. His album "Kurzsam And Fulger" on Hubro is also a beauty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Sam Segal:

@headcleaner, Norwegians are the cowboys of Northern Europe. That's well established.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
doctorjazz:

Not at all familiar with Wallumrad. Scandinavian jazz seems to have this static, meditative quality, from the small amount I've heard.
Avatar 11:32pm
northguineahills:

I prefer my jazz Sweded, w/ a side of Danish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
drowsy:

I would guess that Sam has read Per Petterson's 'Out Stealing Horses' I have not seen the movie yet, but the book is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
doctorjazz:

this Shalabi is quite intense-if he's Scandinavian, just ignore what I said at 11:32.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
drowsy:

Sam is correct, I think Norway won't join the EU because they would have to give up their cowish dairy ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Sam Segal:

I haven't read that Per Petterson book, but now you've got me curious, Drowsy. Reading Knausgaard has gotten more more interested in Scandinavian literature. I'm going to take a break between Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 of My Struggle to read a novel by Dag Solstad, who I just found out about. Have you ever read anything by him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
zzz:

Shalabi is from montreal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
drowsy:

No, I haven't. But I'll be googlin' on that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
doctorjazz:

Whew, I can hold on to my uncorroborated opinion then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
zzz:

that was a fun track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
doctorjazz:

I read some of the Kurt Wallander books, liked them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
doctorjazz:

The Knausgaard is listed as a "biographical novel", that's odd...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Sam Segal:

Doc, I was going to bring up Han Bennik to poke a hole in your thesis, but it turns out that the Netherlands are not technically part of Scandinavia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Sam Segal:

Haha, yeah I think the "biographical novel" is sort of like a memoir where you have the freedom to make more stuff up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
doctorjazz:

I do love Bennik (got to see him a few times with the Willem Breuker Kollektief. He left his drum set once, went table to table with his sticks, played tables, chairs, glasses at the audience's tables. He was a trip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
doctorjazz:

Tord Gustavsen has groups that are very meditative, that's where that impression comes from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
doctorjazz:

Boy, 2 hours go fast when you start an hour late...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Sam Segal:

Never listened to Tord Gustavsen, but I do enjoy that meditative soft ECM sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm

You've been ill, Sam? Didn't hear that (must have mentioned it before I got here). My daughter's been living with us this past week, her roommate developed COVID, likely be here until after the weekend (as someone said on another chat board, that's one good thing about the pandemic, gets the kids to come visit more).

Yeah, Doc, I had a fairly mild case of COVID. Tested positive last Tuesday. Been recovering steadily over the past week. Feeling close to 100% now, other than some shortness of breath when I do things that require physical exertion.

That sucks, Sam, glad it was not too severe, and you're doing better. My daughter has been fine; her roommate is past the current guideline for isolation, but she's nervous and going to wait a few more days before returning to the big city.
