	9:12am Doug Schulkind: Galax is also home to a particular style of mountain dulcimer sound that was unique to the area.
	9:14am Doug Schulkind: Alex "Uncle Eck" Dudford was a prolific and prodigious fiddler. He won the fiddlers convention competition several times.
	9:15am Doug Schulkind: Pops Stoneman, surely the most famous of the Galax luminaries. Father of a whole brood of wonderful performers.

For me, they instantly paint a picture of an isolated Appalachian place, yet they're also one plugged in to the centuries-old ballad traditions of the UK, and to Africa, through the banjo. So homely and wide-ranging at the same time. For me personally, they're also wired into memories of my dad, who loved that kind of thing, and so to childhood itself.

And, Miles Davis (with Gil Evans) doing "My Ship" (a Kurt Weill, Ira Gershwin tune) from the "Miles Ahead" album. This show feels like the best place in WFMU to mention this. Thanks.

And, it was nice being at a "jazz" show where the average age was in the 20's or 30's, rather than those at jazz venues, where I'm often at the younger age of the attendees (and I ain't no spring chicken).

	10:50am Doug Schulkind: My peak moment in high school (and maybe PAULS can attest to this) was being part of a three-drum act performing at the school's talent show during senior year. (One of the three drummers actually went on to play in the beloved D.C.-area band the Insect Surfers.)

	11:04am Franco Twinkie: That's Funny! In L.A. Tycobrahe was THE company that provided P.A.'s for most of the rock shows in the early '70's. Most bands didn't carry their own dedicated P.A's.
	11:05am David (in London): doctorjazz, I am a regular at the renowned Cafe OTO venue, just down the road. The bill of musical fare is absolutely amazing but the seats are so rudimentary it's sometimes a challenge to make it through the evening whilst perched on one.
	🥁 11:07am Zipperhead7: Kalaparusha! Isn't he the guy who Pete Cosey invited to sit in with Miles onstage at a '75 gig, and he decided to "play everything he knew" which really pissed Miles off and nearly got Cosey fired?
	🥁 11:08am doctorjazz: It was interesting watching the 2 drummers. I'm sure different bands that have dual drummers organize it differently. One drummer had the backbeat, he was constantly playing rolls the whole time. The other had what you might call "accents", he's hit the syncopated beats, the "coloring" riffs. It was cool to watch/hear. David (in London), have some Cafe Oto releases (discovered Pat Thomas when Jeff G played him, amazing), would love to get there one of these days (painful seating and all)

	11:08am Uncle Michael: The first company that had moving lights for concerts and other applications was Vari-Lite, which was owned or funded by the members of the band Genesis. You couldn't buy them, you could only rent them. So every time you ever saw them at any show, Genesis was getting paid.

One of the characters in the film is named Oto, and from the subtitles, I learned that "oto" means "sound" in Japanese. Thus the name Café Oto has meaning that was previously unknown to me.

Nicest thing, after the show band members would sit on the stoop outside on Bleecker St. and talk with the audience. I recall doing that with Bunk Gardner and Billy Mundi.

	9:14am Doug Schulkind: Alex "Uncle Eck" Dudford was a prolific and prodigious fiddler. He won the fiddlers convention competition several times.
	9:15am Doug Schulkind: Pops Stoneman, surely the most famous of the Galax luminaries. Father of a whole brood of wonderful performers.

For me, they instantly paint a picture of an isolated Appalachian place, yet they're also one plugged in to the centuries-old ballad traditions of the UK, and to Africa, through the banjo. So homely and wide-ranging at the same time. For me personally, they're also wired into memories of my dad, who loved that kind of thing, and so to childhood itself.

And, it was nice being at a "jazz" show where the average age was in the 20's or 30's, rather than those at jazz venues, where I'm often at the younger age of the attendees (and I ain't no spring chicken).

	11:05am David (in London): doctorjazz, I am a regular at the renowned Cafe OTO venue, just down the road. The bill of musical fare is absolutely amazing but the seats are so rudimentary it's sometimes a challenge to make it through the evening whilst perched on one.

	🥁 11:08am doctorjazz: It was interesting watching the 2 drummers. I'm sure different bands that have dual drummers organize it differently. One drummer had the backbeat, he was constantly playing rolls the whole time. The other had what you might call "accents", he's hit the syncopated beats, the "coloring" riffs. It was cool to watch/hear. David (in London), have some Cafe Oto releases (discovered Pat Thomas when Jeff G played him, amazing), would love to get there one of these days (painful seating and all)

One of the characters in the film is named Oto, and from the subtitles, I learned that "oto" means "sound" in Japanese. Thus the name Café Oto has meaning that was previously unknown to me.

Nicest thing, after the show band members would sit on the stoop outside on Bleecker St. and talk with the audience. I recall doing that with Bunk Gardner and Billy Mundi.
