Brainiac from Neuron 3:

Thomas Blanchard Wilson Jr. (March 25, 1931 – September 6, 1978) was an American record producer best known for his work in the 1960s with The Velvet Underground, Nico, Bob Dylan, the Mothers of Invention, Simon & Garfunkel, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Eddie Harris, Eric Burdon and the Animals, the Blues Project, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and others.

Wilson was an important producer (alongside his contemporaries Phil Spector, George Martin, Jimmy Miller, Brian Wilson, Quincy Jones, Tom Dowd, and Teo Macero) of the 1960s. He has been said to have had the skill of "putting the right people together for the right projects".

I tried to get into this band a few years ago, bought "Heavier than a Death in the Family", didn't like it at all - as I recall it had a lot of painful, screeching guitar feedback - but this is sounding a lot groovier and cooler to me today. I really appreciate it.

I guess everybody knows this, but this band has an absolutely wild back story. In 67-68 they had ties to the Japanese Red Army, were total political radicals, and the original bassist was part of a group that hijacked a plane and went to North Korea and was never heard from again. That's pretty extreme!

A"bit" of bad planning = not realizing a plane of that size could not do a long haul to Cuba. There was a great Nat'l Lampoon issue of anti-terrorist full page glossy cartoons (late '70s?) one of which was a guy hijacking a bus in the us demanding that the bus go to Cuba....

@TomDash and others - any recommendations on starting point[s] for digging into The Ex's back catalog? Familiar with Moa Anbessa and some of the mid-2010s singles, but their sound can't be pinned down to those, obviously
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am
Handy Haversack:

Yeah, ryansterlingvirtue, it worked fine in Troubleshooting Mode (all add-ons disabled), so that's why I think it's one of them suddenly causing a problem. Since the add-ons are all privacy-focused, it makes sense that Google would get all humpty about one!

I *may* have solved it by turning off a bunch of stuff in the ClearURLs add-ons. I have successfully composed three e-mails, so for now I'm going to take the win.

Yaaaaaay, now I can work again. Yaaaaay.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
evancuts:

I was at that Knitting Factory show! NYT review: Robin Holcomb's folk music, acoustic and distraught, is for the 21st century. At the Knitting Factory on Thursday night, this Seattle-based singer and pianist performed songs that, whatever their explicit lyric content, seemed to be about loss.

Ms. Holcomb sat at a grand piano, her pale hair falling down her back, her hands sewing melodic phrases that were simple and homespun pure. Her voice was so fragile, you feared it might break; her performance had a devastatingly poetic quality, like a tune from a music box, or a moment of silence.

Ms. Holcomb's songs are enlarged moments. She repeats images again and again, until a line like "needle full of miracles" escalates to the grand proportion of worldly significance. Her lyrics are thoughts, stark yet vague, that beg to be filled in by the listener. "So Straight and Slow," a song from her 1990 debut album "Robin Holcomb" (Elektra Musician), begins with the words, "A deer struck down by a car brings two cows in trade," then unravels into a mysterious remembrance of a long day's drive. At the Knitting Factory she managed not to be precious by coloring her thoughts with rainy, gray accompaniment. The clarinetist Doug Wieselman played a counter-line that threaded her vocals, and her left hand would suddenly strike a minor chord that upset the delicate melodic balance.

Throughout the set, Ms. Holcomb's usually subtle arrangements -- bass, electric and acoustic guitar, brushed drums, saxophone -- would occasionally balloon into full-out adult rock, with screaming guitar leads and busy drum fills. But she was at her best when she was alone. The opening song, which began with the line "I want to tell the story," needed only soft chords played one after another with sonorous regularity; "Deliver Me," an encore, had a plaintive melody as immediately memorable as its reflection that "the light is only perfect for a very short time." Ms. Holcomb eschewed showy techniques and elaborations. Her music expressed a longing for a simplicity of life that is too quickly dissipating.
