This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:34pm

sounds almost effortless, but throbs with soul and depth, really remarkable. that "I Will Follow Him" bassline crossed with the "wade in the water" strings arrangement really sends it all to heaven and beyond

Mexican here! From Monterrey actually, where the "rebajadas" (slowed) movement peaked in the "Cholombiano" subculture in the slums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
zzz:

cumbia set! i’ve been loving the tracks off this rebajada set i’ve heard so far. ooooh these slowed vocals
Avatar 7:49pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Mantarray!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
chresti:

I love the "rebajadas"!
Avatar 7:51pm
Flash Strap:

"in Monterrey, sonidero Gabriel Dueñez almost got electrocuted by a short circuit that nearly set his record player on fire. As a result the platter started spinning in slow motion for the rest of the party, turning Cumbia into a different affair altogether. The youngsters went crazy for it and started harassing the sonidero with requests to record cassettes for them. Reluctant at first, Dueñez finally began recording a series of pirated cassettes called "Rebajada" which included mainly Colombian cumbia and porro in slow-mo exclusively. Those tapes took the city by storm and turned rebajada into a celebrated and defiant movement of the youth."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
zzz:

some have been describing these slowed mixes as sort of chopped and screwed cumbia, this track has a sort of dubby feel
Avatar 7:53pm
Flash Strap:

i would be really cool if there had been some sort of a full-fledged cumbia dub movement, enough that there were actual releases & unique techniques
Avatar 7:54pm
Flash Strap:

that last one almost sounded slowed down too, but now we speeeeed uuuup for real

Bit of Klezmer sound there...
Avatar 8:02pm
Flash Strap:

i hear it too Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm
zzz:

was just thinking that, reminded me of that great roberto rodriguez album where he does jewsish/klezmer - latin mix, david krakauer on clarinet
Avatar 8:04pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm

Early 20th Century there was quite a bit of cross pollination between jazz, Latin, and Klezmer musicians, with many jumping across lines, playing with the other genres.
  8:08pm

very nice piece of history! loving this Jaime Llano. Makes me want to dance in an Acapulco balcony.
