The Threadgill album is X-75 Volume 1. The track I had in mind is Celebration (side one, track 2 if one is analog). It actually lists 4 flutes, 4 basses (both of different ranges), and Amina Claudine Meyers on vocal. All 4 tracks on the album use the 4 bass, 4 flute, or both in the instrumentation (Arista Novus AN 3013). (I have the original LP, and also have a CD compilation of Threadgill on Mosaic, which has it, and Volume 2, which H hadn't seen before the Mosaic was released).

The weirdest ( I wasn't going to tell this story because I'm too lazy to type it all out, but it's so weird ) 'concert' moment was this thing that happened where I go to see David Thomas & the Wooden Birds [DT, Lindsay Cooper, Chris Cutler, Tony Maimone...also fr Per Ubu] at the Hotel Isabella bar, which at that time in the late 80s was a typical dive bar in a big old hotel, and it's a really good Friday night gig in a little room with hardly anyone there, really weird and wonderful but that's not it, it's that I say to my girlfriend at the time, hey, we're already off (for some reason I can't remember) why don't we go to New York we have just enough money or something and there's was a deal on so we we're in New York the following afternoon where I learned that Sun Ra Arkestra was playing that night at Sweet Basil, so we go there of course, and it's already getting populated, and we get one of those good small tables that they have (had?) and I sit and I look up and Tony Maimone is sitting across the table from me:at a [mind-blowing] Sun Ra Arkestra show. So we talked and drank wine and walked part of the way home together afterward. They were @ Maxwells that very night. We were invited to show up...but we never made it...and never spoke again to TM. @Andrew in TO > 12:07 > Bert's store. I had to cast my mind back to THAT Vortex. Very cool. We must have met. Equally weird. (...and no, although a devotee of CKLN at the time and so well-informed about things, I did not know That David's mom and sister were at that show. I mainly get hilarity out of that, considering the performance.

@String Bert and I are still great friends.
He had a mailing address taped to the back of one of his family members chairs.

There are some early examples of tunes being edited in the pre-tape era. I don't know how that could've been done with acetate discs, but it was.

Great info Will! Makes sense it took him a few times to get it right. Considering the technology, it still blows my mind. Just the very ~idea~ of overdubbing a whole song back then is astounding!
Again, if anyone else did this already I don't know of it. This is before tape, hence, before Les Paul etc.

@Andrew > I never knew Bert, but dealt with him several times; he was always fair-dealing, and ran a tight ship. That was great store. The last time I saw him was in the middle of the afternoon in the lobby of The Carlton Cinema, both of us having just witnessed the documentary Hotel Terminus: The Life & Times of Klaus Barbie in an otherwise empty theatre. I know he recognized me and could see that I knew him but I don't think we could speak

There's a Roy Eldridge recording where he plays over his own piano playing, but I believe it's after the Bechet thing.
Avatar 12:38pm
Bob Brainen:

wm. That seems like some trick. I can't imagine how. Not saying it didn't happen, just can't imagine it.
But with Bechet, I'm pretty sure each part is a complete performance. That takes some serious concentration! And the technology to hear what you've already done was so primitive.

If you know the name, wm, would love to hear it.

Wikipedia seems to have a bunch of info, on overdubbing... But as far as before Bechet, citations are needed. scroll down to history... en.m.wikipedia.org...

wm. I know, I was just saying how it sounds to me. As far as editing, sort of amazing that when Teo did it with Miles it was shocking-and suspect. And this was way way later! Mid 50s. Of course with tape anyone could edit. All you needed was a razor blade.

A quick Google (I was also curious) found 1 overdubbed Eldridge from the listing of a Mosaic Eldridge release (which I sadly don't have), he overdubbed 1 track.., trumpet and flugelhorn.

I) ROY ELDRIDGE AND ALVIN STOLLER: Roy Eldridge (tp, flg-1, p with overdubbed tp-2), Alvin Stoller (d).

don't know if anyone already knows this already but I've just learned that mike considine of My Three sons had died last Thursday. Shelagh McDonald sings there of Jeff in TheTridents - you probly know that's a pre-yARdbiRdS JeffBeck band. She mentions going to the island & their commute to & from - & they performed on Eel Pie island, where Pete Townshend of course later had a recording studio (which I believe burned down)...
