Mdou Moctar was excellent. The sound was super clean (which, it's BAM, so it better be). I hadn't been to a "sit-down" concert in a *while*. Thankfully, after a semiacoustic set to start off, when they broke out the full drum kit and really plugged in, Mdou Moctar told everyone to stand up. Thank goodness.
The crowd was really into it and was surprisingly young. I have zero idea how ~1,500 25-35-yr-olds heard of Mdou Moctar much less knew the music already and were cheering at all the right spots. I mean, how do they hear about stuff without WFMU? Clueless over here.
One real revelation from this show that I never really grokked on the albums: HO.LY. CRAP the drummer. My god, that guy was amazing. I don't know that I've ever seen a drum performance quite like it. Absolutely fascinating and just viscerally exciting and charged.
It was great, but it really made me wish we were seeing them in a small room. So jealous of the people who saw them at Monty Hall.
We ran into listener Ike, and he came across the street with us and hung out while we had a couple of beers, which was really great. He, K8, and I all had the Pulaski Skyway hoodie on!
Also, Mdou Moctar was just here in Sept. The group *tours*, so hopefully they are near you soon!
¡Todo bien, Stillwell! I was mentioning you last night and your stories of going to shows in Brooklyn in the seventies. So nice to be seeing music again.
