Part of the mistrust of science also has to do with big corporations creating fake studies to “prove” their products were safe, such as tobacco and oil companies. They widely spread the concept of “alternative facts” and “biased science”, and then the counter from progressive scientists and environmentalists and such claiming the others are corporate shills. @Wendy, that’s so true! Im also reminded of Nietzsche “Immediately upon the appearance of corruption anywhere, a motley superstition gets the upper hand, and the hitherto universal belief of a people becomes colourless and impotent in comparison with it; for superstition is freethinking of the second rank, he who gives himself over to it selects certain forms and formulae which appeal to him, and permits himself a right of choice. The superstitious man is always much more of a "person," in comparison with the religious man, and a superstitious society will be one in which there are many individuals and a delight in individuality. Seen from this standpoint superstition always appears as a progress in comparison with belief, and as a sign that the intellect becomes more independent and claims to have its rights.”

@KfHP, Futurama is brilliant. I didn't like the second iteration of Futurama as much -- apparently they were being cheap and didn't have a real writers' room when they brought it back, so the scripts were just being written by one person each instead of being passed around to different writers who would each add more jokes, the way they're *supposed* to do it. So among the Comedy Central episodes, most of the best ones are the more dramatic, dramedy-ish, or conceptual ones. So I have mixed feelings about it being revived yet again.

Well, yes, but only because 'we' 'want' it to, that is enough people want what's being sold to make it profitable.

That's why Fascism and Bolshevism did just fine with just radio and the press and men willing to kill and inflict pain; I don't believe in Mr Hurst's remedies because just The Web and us are all that's needed.

castor: _Excellent_ Nietzsche quote. I have long since stopped being surprised by people who claim to 'reject Authority' when what they actually do is reject conventional Authority but treat other authorities with zero scepticism…and feel liberated.

I honestly enjoy Mark Hurst's show so much, however, I sometimes wish Techtonic went just a little further out, a little riskier, a little more adventurous. For example: lets talk about Universal ID.

@ultra, if they don't *at least* spin that into a series of jokes about fake Benders trying to replace the real Bender a la fake versions of Superman coming back from the dead, then the writers are truly hopeless.

It's clear to me that there is a parallel between the flat earth society and Bizarro World. All sorts of nutty backwards types of behavior were presented as proof how you could have a society that functioned more or less by it's own rules. The main difference between the two is Bizarro Word was a cube.
