I was positing this morning, dreamyandseedy, that Bandcamp needs to start selling pockets of extra time so that we can listen to the stuff we hear on WFMU and then pick up on Bandcamp without missing hearing anything on WFMU that we want to pick up later on Bandcamp.

Question can you listen to stuff for free on Bandcamp?
  Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
WR:

Yes, Robm, some only allow a few sample cuts to be played without owning, but there is much much much you can listen to via web page.
  3:36pm
Robm:

@WR thanks
  Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
WR:

There are even some that only allow the first 30 seconds to be listened to but, at least for the artists I follow I've only seen that for a few albums. I think it is up to the artist or label who put the release on BC and it varies between releases, whatever they choose to allow.
  3:39pm
Robm:

@WR sounds like BC is a go to for a lot of listeners and djs
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Handy Haversack:

Yeah, I have seen the artist dashboard, and you have total control over how much you want to allow to be streamed for free on the page.
Avatar 🦇 3:40pm

it is THE Best place to buy music from.
Avatar 3:40pm
HyperDose:

I mean you could totes rip songs and albums at 128 like YouTube or SoundCould, but nothing beats that sweet sweet full fidelity of even a FLAC or even 320 file. That's why you need to rip from services like Tidal or Deezer.
  3:41pm
Robm:

Avatar 🦇 3:41pm

or you know, actually BUY the music at high quality
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm

i like reading the comments on bandcamp and seeing everyone's favorite tracks. it's also easy to follow the artists and get updates on releases, easier than following on social media.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Rich in Washington:

I've shifted a huge amount of my musical purchasing since the pandammit and Bandcamp Fridays.
I've only recently started downloading my purchases as FLACs, but the beauty of Bandcamp is I can go back and download my purchases again.
  3:43pm
Robm:

Thanks guys this is why i love the accu, great answers from the listmind, and there are lots of interesting discussions
Avatar 🦇 3:44pm
Julie:

yes! I do that all the time, it's so easy to lose track of digital stuff. I also buy CDs and records from bandcamp. Almost always buy at least one physical release on BC Fridays
Avatar 🦇 3:44pm
Julie:

Robm, FMU listeners know SO MUCH
Avatar 3:45pm
HyperDose:

Since vinyl made a comeback, does that mean record stores have too? I love the smell of a fresh CD booklet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Rich in Washington:

@Robm @3:34: some artists let you stream entire albums for free before buying and some only let you listen to a track or two, and some artists even put a cap on how many times you can listen to an album and you get a popup enticing you to buy instead. I find that last thing is rather rare, thoough.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:45pm

I DL pretty much all as MP3s. But I purchase on physical media through BC whenever I can.

Avatar 🦇 3:49pm

the pricing of stuff on BC is very strange though. someone was selling a cassette for $5 and the digital for $5 as well. then you see digital albums for 12-13. I like that $8 seems to be the norm.

I've bought big box sets by artists there and sometimes the CD option ends up being cheaper than the download only option, even after shipping, and you get the digital download free with the CD purchase. Go figure.
Also, some labels do the same with vinyl purchases but not very often. It pays to look at the options before dropping the hammer.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah and sort of an answer to HyperDose's (perhaps rhetorical) question: are there more record stores opening up? - I can say that there's an all new vinyl store now in my immediately little town but it's def geared towards neophyte record enthusiasts, with lots of very expensive issues, etc. I find I rarely buy anything other than poly bags or inner sleeves.

i have a weird story about a "record store", i live in a tiny town in rural texas and i was driving down the highway recently and i saw a new establishment, between the liquor store and the bar. it was called "hill country tunes" and i was like, oh my god, is this a record store OR a recording studio??? is something happening in this town that i don't know about???
i thought about this for days and then looked it up online and it's a fking electronic gambling place

Julie, I planned ahead and laid in groceries last night so that I wouldn't have to take off during the show ... and now we're out of pet food. Why do I try?

They say it was this song that inspired Hotblack Desiato and Disaster Area to start their showstopping trick of crashing a remote spaceship into the local sun. Did Roger Waters ever have to spend a year dead for tax purposes?

(And why isn't David here to appreciate my witticisms?!)

Without knowing much about them, I would hazard the guess that it's Fleetwood Mac.
I think there's only been a few iterations of Floyd: Barrett era, post Barret, Post Waters.
I could be wrong, though.

yeah I mean you have albums where Gilmour is the guy, and others where Waters is... a lot of different sounds happening. Dark Side of the Moon aint nothin like The Wall.

NYC classic rock thru the 80s and 90s never touched early Pink Floyd. Even my Floyd-liking roommate never went back to the Barrett stuff. Wasn't until I began listening to FMU that I heard that stuff. "See Emily Play" just floored me the first time I heard it.

I stumbled onto Syd era Floyd by buying the Works compilation. I was a teen wanting some Floyd and the record store didn't have Dark Side so I grabbed it. Didin't know what to make of it. Loved See Emily Play and had no idea who was grooning with a Pict...

At least in Finland, 80s/80s, when there were these after school clubs organized by local council organized where preteen kids were taught to play rock, this was usually among the first few songs to learn. Believe me, there were plenty of clumsy junior versions of this one.
