D(iL): I'm good, thanks for asking. A little tired of pandemic & winter but fortunately healthy, employed, vaccinated, boosted, etc. Got snowed in the last 2 days, haven't been out much, eating up everything that's in the cupboards and finishing the whiskey. We're going to a show tonight (something we don't do much!) so I'm excited about that.

Yeti Bob, glad to hear it pal. I'm trying to bust the winter gloom by booking a few nights out at Cafe OTO myself. No snow to impede me here, so I have no excuse. Keep your spirits up my friend.

Don't know Ben LaMar Gay. I'm instinctively in favour of anyone with the name LaMar though (probably as a result of Blazing Saddles). Just check his online profile. Looks good! Let me know how the show is.

ChukAmok: Years ago I did a fill-in on a college radio station during their "World Music" show. I played a side of Circle's "Sunrise" which I was sort of obsessed with at the time. The station phone rang off the wall, angry world-music fans saying "What the hell is this racket?" - I replied "What, is Finland not part of the world???"

My guess for this week is Malawi.
Avatar 🚂 12:49pm
YETI BOB:

DD: Exactly, "World music" is sort of a ridiculous category. Which is part of the reason I chose to play Circle. But I wasn't doing it to annoy anyone - I genuinely like that album! (As a sometime DJ, I never play music for ironic purposes, I only ever play music that I want to hear)
Avatar 🚂 12:52pm
Carmichael:

That's Richard Thompson guitar, obviously. And Nepal for me.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Use 'International Music' as the least illogical term I can come up with... For one thing, the term 'World Music' applied to a particular attempted Fusion style @ one time...

Yes, I love this set!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Irony is - if called 'International Music' - it's often the opposite: the Regional Music of a particular place just considered their - Music, be it their Pop or Folk...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
David Dichelle:

Thanks, Dr. J. and Diana. And all thanks to Norma.
Avatar 🚂 12:57pm

World Music is a marketing term, I think. Just like Alternative.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Handy Haversack:

Shipping charges on Circle are off the hook, YB!

I always assumed World Music was to make it clear that Plutonian musicians could fuck right off?
Avatar 🚂 12:58pm

Galactic music, Handy.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the only maybe Not of this World Music I can think of is Fiorella Terenzi turning astronomical data into Sounds as Compositions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hi David. I guess that little tribute to Noma a couple of weeks ago was in anticipation of her coming exit? When I told my friend, h corrected me on some of the specifics of meeting The Watersons. He said it was in the mid '80's, not the '70's. In addition to Lal, he also met mike and Norma. He was duly impressed that WFMU and you in particular were their champions.
Avatar 🚂 1:02pm
YETI BOB:

HH: Tell me about it!! A lot of the albums I've bought recently were unavailable in local shops (which I always check first), so I've been getting stuff delivered from Germany, France, etc. It's expensive and I worry about the carbon footprint, although I tell myself that a few LPs are just a drop in the bucket of global shipping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
David Dichelle:

Speaking of galactic: Eliza Carthy sings Monty Python's Galaxy Song, which happens to be on this album (Anchor) as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
David Dichelle:

Hello Franco Twinkie. Always glad to share their music! Are you referring to the link someone posted to fund the Waterson-Carthy family in their hard times? I can imagine they need everyone's support especially now.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
coelacanth∅:

Carm @1257 it is... but as inaccurate as "world music" may be, it's absurdity pales in comparison to that of "alternative"

I have no idea what I'm referring to David. I had a terrible night - up and down. But this set is bringing me back to life, that's for sure!
Avatar 1:14pm
ChukAmok:

@RevRab Not of this World Music is all of those awesome recordings of space like the one made of Ganymeade last June.
And by that definition I would like to qualify World Music as applying only the sounds contained on Voyager's Golden Record. Any other definition is just western marketing strategy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
David Dichelle:

3M: Not at all - as long as I don't forget what I'm doing (which is not entirely out of the question either).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Handy Haversack:

Is there a marketing term for "music from everywhere except Missouri"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm

Franco - glad you enjoyed it. They recorded so much wonderful music, the set could have gone on for hours.

@Diana in Hungary Waiting patiently and carefully plotting for the next opportunity to re-launch WOMAD, no doubt.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - but Missouri Music came from Scotland & the Congo & First Nations people anyhow - see...
'Alternative' was 1000% a way of Ghettoizing it as anything but simply the New Rawk you should be formatting into the continuity... Everything got Target Audienced of course as a symptom of the Music Industry being bought up by Lawyers & Bean Counters - in turn a symptom of general broad Oligarchy & More & More being owned by Fewer & Fewer...

@Handy But what of the music *from* the Falklands?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm

Yes, I could do a long Falklands reveal set and then just a track or two from the islands. Or maybe they have more to offer than I suspect. I haven't really checked yet.

One day, Bass asked us to write a song about Kansas City for Little Willie Littlefield. Kansas City was the home of swing, jazz and the blues—music Jerry and I loved—and it was known as a pretty wild place." - www.wsj.com...
