Like Dreamers Do was one of their standout original songs at the time of it’s recording, but after being signed 1962 the Beatles seemed to lose interest in it, and it wasn’t chosen to be recorded for any of their albums. In 1964 the Beatles met the Applejacks, another beat group, while rehearsing for a television show. They offered to let the up-and-coming group record Like Dreamers Do, making it one of the many Lennon-McCartney songs they “gave away”. The Applejack’s version reached number 20 on the U.K. singles chart.

@WLSClark: Properly called a "dinker" — but that wasn't nearly as humorous for me to write" — it's a tool, usually foot-operated, by which you can convert small-hole 45s into large-hole 45s, with only a small-to-medium failure rate.

Lee Everett or Lee Everett Alkin (born Audrey Valentine Middleton; 14 February 1937) is a British spiritual healer and businesswoman who was previously a pop singer and celebrity psychic under the stage name Lady Lee.

Born in Sheffield, Audrey Middleton moved to London in 1958 after the breakdown of her first marriage. She was a backing singer for Emile Ford before Larry Parnes became her manager and gave her the stage name "Lady Lee". She also attracted media attention as the girlfriend of Billy Fury, one of Parnes's best known artists. In 1964 she got a recording contract and released three singles, none a hit: a cover of "I'm into Something Good", recorded around the same time by Herman's Hermits; "Ninety-Nine Times Out of a Hundred" by Ivor Raymonde, released in May 1965; and "My Whole World (Seems to be Tumbling Down)" by Tony Macaulay and Don Paul, released in October 1965.

In 1967 she split up with Fury. In 1969 she married disc jockey Kenny Everett; they separated in 1979 and divorced in 1984. He wrote the foreword to her autobiography, published in 1987, but later criticised the book for outing him; the two remained estranged until his death.[1] Katherine Kelly played Lee in The Best Possible Taste, a BBC drama about Kenny Everett shown in 2012

cometothesunshine:

Mike Leander did maybe his best work on this - it is just right
Avatar 7:13pm
MOM WHIG:

Super cool arrangement
  7:13pm
G.T.:

As long as they were gonna adorn the thing, mebbe the Fabs should've let Leander have a shot at the post 'Get Back' project instead of Spector, especially given what we've heard so far today!
  7:14pm
Richard Whig:

Chester LOVES this track!
Avatar 7:14pm
Eric R:

George Martin wrote that he conducted this off Mike Leander's score, keeping it intact except for a couple of very slight changes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Gaylord Fields:

As much as I think Mike Leander's arrangement is very fitting to the song and quite lovely, I always wondered how GM's score would have departed from Leander's.
Avatar 7:14pm
MOM WHIG:

Glad Chester is groovin to it!!!
  7:14pm
Dakota:

The backing on this is gorgeous, makes the whole piece one of the best songs ever released by the Beatles (and what an accomplishment).
Avatar 7:15pm
cometothesunshine:

I love the story about Paul playing this for Brian Wilson in April 1967 and he cried.

floating on a cloud more like it!

And the Indian inflection on the cello in those short parts.
  7:15pm
WLSClark:

Gayord, good point. I doubt it would sound anything like this, yet would also be beautiful.
Avatar 7:16pm
cometothesunshine:

Sped up and completed
  7:16pm
Javi from Argentina:

Simply stunning. I got goosebumps
Avatar 7:16pm
cometothesunshine:

With a few edits and dropping one cello part.
Avatar 7:17pm
Eric R:

That Indian inflection ties it into the feel of the LP. Makes it link with within you...
Avatar 7:17pm
MOM WHIG:

Glad to hear some Beatles tunes tonite by them
Avatar 7:17pm
cometothesunshine:

Just imagining the guy who wrote Lady Godiva and Knight In Rusty Armour had the good taste to keep it all in check.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Gaylord Fields:

I play a little game to myself called "What's my second-favorite song on each Beatles album" without revealing what my first choice is, and SLH is my selection for Pepper.
Avatar 7:18pm
MOM WHIG:

Gaylord - Wow a game?? What a super idea.
Avatar 7:18pm
cometothesunshine:

Mike Leander - no credit on the back of Pepper - meanwhile Dion won't shut up about being on the front cover!
  7:18pm
WLSClark:

Gaylord, Blue Jay Way??????
  7:19pm
WLSClark:

Andrew, how funny
  7:19pm

They SLH is my second favorite song of Pepper too!

Loudermilk. Underrated songwriter

Eric you were quick to star this one
Avatar 7:20pm
Natalie:

That was a fantastic little journey into a gorgeous tune. Thanks for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm

@Mom Whig: I like this game because revealing your #2 without saying your #1 takes the pressure off.
Avatar 7:20pm
cometothesunshine:

Sure - it is really extraordinary, Natalie.
Avatar 7:21pm

Gaylord - you nailed it perfectly!

That’s a extremely good idea, Gaylord.

Nils Lofgren had his photo pulled from Sgt peppers. ;)
Avatar 7:22pm
cometothesunshine:

Mike Leander ended his career marketing books on tape, in particular erotic novels. A lesson that even with hit songs and productions, everyone in music has to keep working their whole lives.
  7:22pm
WLSClark:

Eric, you're cheating. No revisionism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
Gaylord Fields:

Andrew, Dion is one of five living people on that cover, and I believe he'll stop at nothing to be the last one standing (maybe that'll be my new murder mystery: "The Billy Shears Murders").
  7:22pm
WLSClark:

This sounds like Montanas music!
Avatar 7:23pm
Eric R:

Clark, its such a difficult game! Would probably be fixing a hole
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm

@cometothesunshine: So it seems "Lady Godiva" was a bit of foreshadowing for Leander.
Avatar 7:23pm

Sheila Bromberg (1928-2021) was a British harpist who performed in both classical and popular settings. She is best known for her important participation on the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, thus becoming the first female to ever record on a Beatles album
Avatar 7:24pm
cometothesunshine:

she played harp on two James Bond films in the 1960s, Dr. No and Goldfinger. In addition, she earned regular wages as a session musician for popular artists such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, the Bee Gees, Dusty Springfield, and Sammy Davis Jr
Avatar 7:25pm
MOM WHIG:

Andrew such a beautiful talent she had.
Avatar 7:25pm
cometothesunshine:

And I think she is the harpist on all of these Leander recordings.
  7:26pm
Dakota:

Amazing information, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm

Sheila Bromberg's a'ight, but as a harpist she's no Mike Love's sister! :)

I just read your comment, Andrew, about Mr. Leander's later career.

Is that inspiration to keep your book topics on track? Get ahead of the game before you're in a complicated position!
Avatar 7:31pm
cometothesunshine:

Natalie - I think he must have been fairly unpretentious in his creative exploits.
Avatar 7:33pm
cometothesunshine:

It seems like he road a wave of different styles till the hits ebbed in the 1970s. He also didn't make the rounds as a Beatlefest guest in later years.
Avatar 7:33pm
Natalie:

A wise choice.
Avatar 7:37pm

It's amazing how this guy so talented and having written so many great songs couldn't make a living off royalty checks. Sad.
Btw, great show Andrew. I don't want it to end!

Javi - according to his obit written by co-writer/partner Edward Seago, Leander enjoyed lavish dinners whether or not songs were hits. A lot of records = a lot of expensive dinners.
Avatar 7:44pm
cometothesunshine:

In a different life, he would have lived longer and been rediscovered.
  7:45pm

He should have gone to McDonalds lol
Avatar 7:46pm

Hopefully more people will discover his work in the future.
Avatar 7:46pm
cometothesunshine:

Mike Leander was indeed the Musical Man.
Avatar 7:48pm

I like the fact that the songs he wrote on his own were the equal to those he co-wrote and that he brought something of himself to each of his arrangements.
