The Conversation (1974) is a good film, but it is only fair to note that the film is highly derivative of Antonioni's Blow Up (1967). The similarities are so great (even to the point of both films beginning with mimes) that The Conversation is a virtual remake of Blow Up.

@ WM: Yes, it's true about the Conversation Vs. Blow up. But it doesn't matter. They are both excellent movies and Coppola to his credit doesn't just ape whatever Antonioni did but takes it to another place. yes, many similarities, but also many unique qualities.

  5:05pm
WM:

To go back to the beginning, Antonioni's Blow Up is based on a story by Julio Cortazar. I think the film is actually better than the story - one of the few examples of a film surpassing its literary source. Coppola's film is skillful but not original and DePalma's film is just a weak rehash of both.

Handy I thought you were leaving for some reason, didn't mean to give you a premature Goodbye
  5:19pm
WM:

Sorry, Fabio. I've got to disagree. There are sections of The Conversation that are virtual quotations from the Antonioni film. The long, curcial scene in which Hackmann isolates the key section of the tape is very similar to the scene in which David Hemmngs blows up the film. And note that in each case they are both wrong about the initial conclusion they draw from the evidence.

Handy Haversack:

Nope, Bruce, I was just cheersing youse with this first cocktail, a Last Word.

Is Santa Fe really expensive? In the 1940s, my dad and his girlfriend drove across the country from Key West to San Fran. They reached Santa Fe, though, and my dad fell in love with it and wanted to stay. He saw a sign for "waitress wanted" on a diner and suggested they stay. His GF said, "Why do I always have to get the job?" And on they went. Soon he was friends with the jazz greats and then moved to the Village, and that was that. Yadda yadda, here's your Handy.

I can't agree that an imitation can be superior to the original. Most of De Palma's films are just a rehash of Hitchcock. Willful ignorance is not a valid critical perspective. I think it was G. K Chesterton who said, regarding brilliant Broadway signs "what a pleasure this must be for people who can't read." Although.... Come to think of it Hertzog's remake of Nosferatu (1979) is in many ways superior to the Murnau original of 1922. "Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds..."
