Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
Gaylord! <3
I love this Arthur Russell instrumental stuff I keep hearing on good ol' FMU. His music is so far-reaching. I'm always surprised (but I shouldn't be at this point) when I hear yet another style of music with his name on it.

Little late to the party tonight, but happy Sunday Gaylord and pals!!
Just tuned in from within a crisis and am so grateful for the song playing at that moment. Never not transporting (to a better place than the one I’m in).
Thanks friends. It’s nothing out of the ordinary, I’m afraid. My 7-yr-old niece has covid, with symptoms, and after testing negative yesterday her mom (my kid sister) got whomped with symptoms today. My 80-yr-old mom lives with them and while she is understandably meant to be isolating in her room, she’s apparently been walking out of it, maskless, with her hand cupped over her mouth. You know, for safety. The kicker? She’s a retired m.d.
I mean, it has to be seen as morbidly funny that my partly unreasonable mom, a daughter of science and the rational world, is using her bare hand for a mask...
@Will the Sound Guy: thank you for sharing another photo of your daughter. While newborn smiles are enigmatic, still like to think she was digging what was playing on 'FMU at the time.
Mike W: Yes, it's true. I'm on Day 9 of quarantine. I'm not sure if it's being vaxxed and boosted, or that I likely got Omicron, or both, that's made my case not too bad. It's not the worst cold I've had, but this one is a sticky mo-fo. It just doesn't want to leave my body.
Thanks, Wendy, phat, and everyone. And Morgan, you are correct. I just wouldn't admit it to myself in hope that it would make me less sad to create distance that isn't there.

Thanks for such a lovely intro to that one, Gaylord <3
Just checking in Gaylord. I can’t listen right now but I’ll catch you on the archives s for sure. My late girlfriend and I used to listen to you live a lot a few years ago but this anniversary I’m out of range. The playlist looks great.
Not like I need to be reminded of it, but for the sake of Ritual i went to clickistar “Be My Baby” and i’ve not seen so many previous on a song here before
Weclome, Mike from Brooklyn, and thanks for sharing the significance of your saying hello. I hope WFMU and music and beautiful memories help make sense of the bewilderment that is living.
7:27pm
David:
Nice tribute to Ronnie. Your choice of Be My Baby on an island is great. Love your show.
The way this set is sketching out also some of the echoes of Ronnie Spector, the artist and the vibe, made me think of the Ponys song “Fall Inn”; i used to play it at DJ gigs to deke the entire room (and because it’s a cool one)
Gaylord, hear me out: if there hasn’t been previously, there kind of needs to be an entire show on Barbara Manning. There’s enough, and space for so many close artists. What if, this one? it doesn’t happen as a posthumous ceremony. I have first-person stories I would contribute, i would record them even.
Please hear my plea

Morgan:
Mike W when I heard josephine foster I thought this is unlike but it kind of isn’t
Morgan — totally. And it felt of a shift from her previous work that i know (half of it? two thirds? —and! it’s also quite lovely).
7:39pm
Mike from Brooklyn:
Hey Mike W. Are you the Mike W haven’t seen for a while?
@Gaylord. Thanks for your reply. You state things perfectly as they are. Your command of words far exceeds mine.
...was playing gittar today & pretty much getting off on it ...then I thot of Television & tried for something they could reach - & didn't get there...
@Mike W: Barbara Manning is a friend of mine, and I love that idea. I will do a living tribute to her sometime this year. What a great concept! Babs is getting her roses while she can still smell them.
7:42pm
pL:
Gaylord. Pete Linzell here. Your show is great..Thank you.
Gaylord, I'm always happy when I can tune in. Your show has provided me with much joy for many years. I'm sure I've said these things to you before, but I'll keep repeating them until you tell me to cut it out. <3
I wouldn't want to try & explain this others ...but many FMU Programs are like Places. It means a great deal, actually.
...Know 'Do I Love You' from the Flamin' Groovies ! Which shows the breadth of influence perhaps...
