Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from February 8, 2022 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm

My one beef with my own generation is, after years of arguing that The Eagles were complete garbage, they did a 180 and now embrace them. I call foul. The Eagles are garbage.

Yeah, I'm playing Frankie Teardrop. Is that bad?

Don-O: Yeah, I've got a new 'zine. You want one?

Anybody who argues that The Eagles were "complete garbage" is obviously defensive about their own secret personal appreciation of The Eagles. Nobody needs to argue that they were mediocre, because they were.

I was thinking about this... is this one of the first punk songs about a comic book character? If not, the first?
Avatar 9:18pm
GeoffreyU:

love that interview
Avatar 9:18pm
Mr Fab:

I'm sticking with "complete garbage". No appreciation whatsoever. They were a "rock" band who could not rock to save their lives, their "country" was about as authentic to country as Pat Boone and Vanilla Ice were to their genres, their songs contained no strong emotions, nothing to make you cry/dance/ move you, their coked-up vocals were a profound annoyance, they possessed no strong/interesting technical/instrumental skils...need I go on?

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm

Obviously, this is a take off of the Jefferson Airplane album, which had come out a couple years before this song. But also, I think this phrase might have existed before, and Airplane was spoofing it originally...?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Austin Rich:

That "Punk Diary" book came out in the 90's, and was an excellent record shopping guide for me as a young man. The CD is sort of weird; clearly the band that is featured on it (someone contemporary) had a deal, and a bunch of their songs are on there for no good reason. But there are some good interview clips that the author collected, and they are pretty good to check out.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

Mr. X: I should have known that your cousin is the reason the kids in Akron are so weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Krys O.:

Bob and Ray used to play a song that spelled out C-L-E-V-E-L-A-N-D which stills goes through my head when I type or write it. "If you've not been there, you've not been anywhere. So come to Cleveland, yes, Cleveland, Ohio."

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm

I did a whole Ghoulardi show many years ago! Maybe I'll bust that out for the Holidays this year.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

I am obsessed with Ghoulardi, and I never saw him live.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

I have to admit that a lot of these songs in this show are sort of on the "edge" of being before 75. The bands were "around" before 75, and learning their chops. But some of these recordings came out a year, or two, or decades later... so the "Before 75" title does need a little asterisk here and there.

I've seen Devo several times and they're always great.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Austin Rich:

This particular Devo Boxed set (Pioneers Who Got Scalped) has lenticular covers, where axes move toward the band. It also came with a recreation of a lenticular botton that they used to sell, and then had to stop for many years. Rhino put it out; very slick and very cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Austin Rich:

Pump Up The Volume was certainly a big influence on me, too. I LOVED that movie, and I wanted to be a renegade DJ like him as a teen.

My mom was also a DJ, so I was certainly inspired by her. And I think there was another member of my family, a sibling of my Grandmother, who was in radio. So I always liked the idea of being a DJ.

Ellen Lovebug:

Liking the languid piano. My cousin in Florida has been a ham radio enthusiast since childhood. He uses Morse code and talks to people in other countries! I was a talk show cohost on WCBN at U of Michigan and then hosted a bunch of talk and music shows on Radio Free Cascadia for like 6 years

Have been enjoying the pleasant dinner music. Helps the digestion and getting the dishes washed.

Mr Fab:

Reminds me of a conversation we were having on another shows chat about pre gentrified America. I remember the liquor store across the street from CBGB had this enormous presumably bullet-proof glass protecting the clerks from their customers. No wonder that neighborhood was the birthing ground of punk.

Hi from Japan!

Mr X, it was everywhere. Certain scenes got known because of successful acts. And NYC, LA and SF had larger scenes.

The Gizmos are another one of those bands that was around for years, but this single only came out in '76. But they were certainly the proto-punk band of Bloomington. There's an MX-80 connection; I think they shared some members, maybe the drummer? The Gizmos had a million members, and apparently were a bit of a force on stage.

I can't help but wonder how, if at all, punk manifested itself in Japan

While not comparable, the club that I spent a lot of time in while I lived in Eugene - Icky's Teahouse - was also in a rough neighborhood. I think certain kinds of punk clubs are always in rough areas. It's the places that will take a chance on weird stuff.

Love the Doors riff they do here.

Ellen Lovebug:

Wow, riffing on The Doors, The End, there!

I like your answer, Mr. X. We should have an ACRONYM contest: what's the best thing you can come up with for OMFUG?

Ellen Lovebug:

Blondie! Early and raw! Love it!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

I love this Blondie song, and it's a shame that it isn't one of their biggest hits. It's SO GOOD. And X Offender is amazing!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Austin Rich:

You gotta have Blondie if you're gonna talk about the early scene. (I also think they were around well before this single came out.)

Ellen Lovebug:

Absolutely.

Out of left field, but this is not the first time I wish the blondie team wrote the lyrics for the Cars. I really like their music but their lyrics sound like they were written by a very hobbled AI. Blondie could do both.

My friend Cheryl, who was the Judge who married me and my wife, gave me a DMZ CD, and said, "You need to absorb this." And I did, and it is GREAT.

The Blondie Team should have written for EVERYONE. They do great work.

dang - DMZ had Robinson, who bridges the Modern Lovers and... the Cars. You are a wizard Rich. Spooky.

Thanks everyone! The last two weeks is a four hour set, a sort of documentary, that I hope to return to later this year. But I'm hoping to go backward, and fill in the stuff between the "radio History" I was playing, and this particular history.

Thanks everyone! There's more to come, for sure.
