They were a "rock" band who could not rock to save their lives, their "country" was about as authentic to country as Pat Boone and Vanilla Ice were to their genres, their songs contained no strong emotions, nothing to make you cry/dance/ move you, their coked-up vocals were a profound annoyance, they possessed no strong/interesting technical/instrumental skils...need I go on?

	👻 9:27pm Austin Rich: Obviously, this is a take off of the Jefferson Airplane album, which had come out a couple years before this song. But also, I think this phrase might have existed before, and Airplane was spoofing it originally...?
	👻 9:30pm Austin Rich: That "Punk Diary" book came out in the 90's, and was an excellent record shopping guide for me as a young man. The CD is sort of weird; clearly the band that is featured on it (someone contemporary) had a deal, and a bunch of their songs are on there for no good reason. But there are some good interview clips that the author collected, and they are pretty good to check out.

	👻 9:34pm Austin Rich: I did a whole Ghoulardi show many years ago! Maybe I'll bust that out for the Holidays this year.

	👻 9:36pm Austin Rich: I have to admit that a lot of these songs in this show are sort of on the "edge" of being before 75. The bands were "around" before 75, and learning their chops. But some of these recordings came out a year, or two, or decades later... so the "Before 75" title does need a little asterisk here and there.

	👻 9:53pm Austin Rich: This particular Devo Boxed set (Pioneers Who Got Scalped) has lenticular covers, where axes move toward the band. It also came with a recreation of a lenticular botton that they used to sell, and then had to stop for many years. Rhino put it out; very slick and very cool.

	10:13pm Ellen Lovebug: I actually lived in Mass. at one point, so that aspect of this song amuses me. Radio on! I can't help but think of Pump Up the Volume, an influence on me as a kid
	👻 10:14pm Austin Rich: Pump Up The Volume was certainly a big influence on me, too. I LOVED that movie, and I wanted to be a renegade DJ like him as a teen. My mom was also a DJ, so I was certainly inspired by her. And I think there was another member of my family, a sibling of my Grandmother, who was in radio. So I always liked the idea of being a DJ.
	10:16pm Ellen Lovebug: Liking the languid piano. My cousin in Florida has been a ham radio enthusiast since childhood. He uses Morse code and talks to people in other countries! I was a talk show cohost on WCBN at U of Michigan and then hosted a bunch of talk and music shows on Radio Free Cascadia for like 6 years

	👻 10:34pm Austin Rich: This is one of those tracks that I was talking about. The Dogs had been around for a while, but I don't think this single came out until '76. But this was one of those groups that grew out of the Stooges scene.
	10:35pm drowsy: I only saw one show in there, Paul K and the Weathermen. Spent most of my show-going years out of NYC.
	10:36pm drowsy: I'd bet on what Aitch said over google.

	10:36pm Mr. X: Would you say that proto-punk clustered only in certain regions, like Detroit, Akron and Cleveland, and NYC? Or was it just everywhere, but not all of it came to our attention?

	10:41pm Mr Fab: Reminds me of a conversation we were having on another shows chat about pre gentrified America. I remember the liquor store across the street from CBGB had this enormous presumably bullet-proof glass protecting the clerks from their customers. No wonder that neighborhood was the birthing ground of punk.

	10:42pm WR: Mr X, it was everywhere. Certain scenes got known because of successful acts. And NYC, LA and SF had larger scenes.
	👻 10:43pm Austin Rich: The Gizmos are another one of those bands that was around for years, but this single only came out in '76. But they were certainly the proto-punk band of Bloomington. There's an MX-80 connection; I think they shared some members, maybe the drummer? The Gizmos had a million members, and apparently were a bit of a force on stage.

	👻 10:44pm Austin Rich: While not comparable, the club that I spent a lot of time in while I lived in Eugene - Icky's Teahouse - was also in a rough neighborhood. I think certain kinds of punk clubs are always in rough areas. It's the places that will take a chance on weird stuff. Love the Doors riff they do here.

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

They were a "rock" band who could not rock to save their lives, their "country" was about as authentic to country as Pat Boone and Vanilla Ice were to their genres, their songs contained no strong emotions, nothing to make you cry/dance/ move you, their coked-up vocals were a profound annoyance, they possessed no strong/interesting technical/instrumental skils...need I go on?

	👻 9:30pm Austin Rich: That "Punk Diary" book came out in the 90's, and was an excellent record shopping guide for me as a young man. The CD is sort of weird; clearly the band that is featured on it (someone contemporary) had a deal, and a bunch of their songs are on there for no good reason. But there are some good interview clips that the author collected, and they are pretty good to check out.

My mom was also a DJ, so I was certainly inspired by her. And I think there was another member of my family, a sibling of my Grandmother, who was in radio. So I always liked the idea of being a DJ.

I was a talk show cohost on WCBN at U of Michigan and then hosted a bunch of talk and music shows on Radio Free Cascadia for like 6 years

I remember the liquor store across the street from CBGB had this enormous presumably bullet-proof glass protecting the clerks from their customers. No wonder that neighborhood was the birthing ground of punk.

There's an MX-80 connection; I think they shared some members, maybe the drummer? The Gizmos had a million members, and apparently were a bit of a force on stage.

I think certain kinds of punk clubs are always in rough areas. It's the places that will take a chance on weird stuff. Love the Doors riff they do here.
