Paper Kosmonaut:

That Anita Meijer track was great. I was swinging in my kitchen. Isn't it an extraordinary fine tune? The fuzzy clavinet/organ, the purring female voice and the weary man that stubles in in the middle?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

by the way, the song is from 1976.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, clicked the wrong Discogs-link i think.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm

stubles is of course stumbles. (now let's see if Jan also changes this comment....) (-:

I was so heavily into garage as a high schooler.
Avatar 1:14pm
Mr Fab:

Jan, do you ever listen to the show "Wired Up"? Don was saying, after playing another Dutch glam gem, how extraordinary it was that the Netherlands' pop culture was largely based on a foreign language. I can't imagine how difficult that must be. Unless all Dutch folk are taught English at an early age?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

We always had subtitled TV, so English is like a second language since the late sixties.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, i heard him say that once. I was one of the first generations to learn English at primary school. The first garage bands hardly new any English, is what I've read.
  1:16pm
MHLee:

I know Icelandic is so complicated the government is concerned teens speak English mainly to each other
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
Jan Turkenburg:

And what PK says. English is all around us.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

And Dutch isn't the best language to write lyrics in IMHO, There are just a few people who manage to write good, fluid and nicely sounding Dutch lyrics. Jan Rot, Aafke Romeijn, Spinvis.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

And.. The Dutch have always been traders. So they hoped with English tunes to have some more sucess abroad. The Netherlands isn't that big for some ego's.
  1:19pm
MHLee:

Cromwell offered the Netherlands a place in the UK... it was a veiled threat
Avatar 1:23pm
Mr Fab:

Fascinating! Thanks, guys.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm

For the small country that we are, we have now shrunk to a proper size as far as awesomeness goes. I think we lost a lot of our 'grandeur' in the last 30 somewhat years. Now I wish we were more like New Zealand..
