	9:04pm Mr Fab: Hi Austin! I recommend visiting a real cave, like the Crystal Cave in Sequoia National Park. It's really huge, strange and cool, not those little holes in the sides of mountains you see in movies.

	👻 9:12pm austinrich: Last of The Juanitas had this adorable, tiny bass player - Lana Rebel - who was smaller than just about any bass player I ever saw. And she shreds. Her country band - Juanita Family - was very popular in PDX.
	👻 9:14pm austinrich: "Little Girl Stuck In A Well." A recurring theme for this episode. Did they predict the Baby Jessica story from the '80's?
	9:21pm Mr. X: I walked through the snow and got asked if I had jumper cables. "Not on me," I said. She scowled and waved me on. I guess I should remember to bring jumper cables when I go on walks.
	👻 9:23pm austinrich: Hmmmmm. I'm not sure you can be faulted for not having jumper cables. That seems to be more than most folks can be expected to have on them.

It's funny, I initially thought I would do a "Grumpy Punk" installment this week, but changed my mind when I felt like "isolation" was starting to be a theme. Only now do I realize that there's a bit of a garage undercurrent.

	9:29pm Mr. X: Yeah I thought it was Rev at first. Then Red. But I think mush mouth narrator enunciated the 'b' at one point.
	👻 9:30pm austinrich: While I am a fan of all of Greg Sage's output, I think "The Power in One" was overlooked by a lot of people because it came out at a weird time, and he was selling the albums himself, and it just didn't hit as big as it could have. I think if it has gone over better, he might have been more enthusiastic about the future of The Wipers.
	9:32pm Mr. X: True, though I had quit the band before their sessions with HR. And BEFORE I joined the band (Stick Against Stone) the Bad Brains had let them use their practice space and park their bus in front, in NYC.
	👻 9:36pm austinrich: I saw "Bishop of Battle" open for Man... Or Astro-Man? in the 90's, and it was the first time I bought a burned CD from a band at a show. I remember thinking $5 seemed steep then. That CD still plays, and I still listen to this disc all the time. The drummer has played mostly in metal bands since then, namely in his band "Witch Mountain." He also writes comics, novels, and is a music critic in PDX. This was his second band.

	9:43pm Krys O.: I think a hand-me-down iMac we had 20 years ago burned CDs in real time. Zoinks.

	👻 9:45pm austinrich: I re-ripped that CDr earlier this year, and and played flawlessly. I think CD Burners in those days were made of sturdier stuff. I have a few CDs from that era that I burned via command line when I used to run Linux... those CDs are sturdy as hell.
	9:46pm Krys O.: The Cave of Night reminds me of CBS Radio Mystery Theater. We listened to that in the early 70s in our household.
	👻 9:46pm austinrich: I love those old CBS Radio Mystery episodes. I only know them via re-runs, but some of them are wonderfully weird.
	👻 9:48pm austinrich: I've been thinking of pitching an "Old Time Radio" show for Sheena. I was playing old Detective shows on my program a while back, and I sort of miss that... but they eat up a big chunk of the show each week if I play a full episode.
	9:49pm Rich in Washington: Re: CDRs. It also depends on what you burn them on. Generally, CDRs branded with an office supply store tend to self-destruct fairly quickly, as does anything with Memorex on it. I've been buying archival quality Taiyo Yuden blanks for about 15 years and I suspect they'll last a while.
	9:50pm Rich in Washington: Diggin' the show Austin! I've been busy cooking up a huge biryani for most of the evening.
	👻 9:50pm austinrich: To Rich's Point: I have some CDs that self-destructed very quickly. A lot of Noise and Experimental guys sell stuff on CDs that die after a couple years! I'm glad I make a habit of ripping a lot of stuff immediately, otherwise some 3" discs I bought would just be artifacts.

	9:57pm Krys O.: My old friend David Quinlan, who did a show on WFMU when I was a student at Upsala College in the early 80s did two things on his overnight show: he read When the Sleeper Wakes in segments and he would play whole Goon Show episodes. I don't know if other people liked it, but I was enthralled by both. Maybe you could do installments. Tune in next time and such
	9:57pm Mr. X: Interstellar Low Ways is one of Sun Ra's most listenable albums, in my humble opinion.

	👻 10:11pm austinrich: When I first moved to PDX, I read in the paper, "Only a great fool would miss Dead Moon when they play live," and so I went and saw them every time I could. About six times total. Every time was AMAZING.

	👻 10:14pm austinrich: When I first got to KPSU in PDX, the "Lost In Translation" movie has just come out. EVERY DJ played this soundtrack, almost all the time. It was sort of a meme in the late 2004's / early 2005's.

	10:15pm Mr. X: @Roku: I saw Neil Young live in a high school gymnasium in Salinas, 1982.
	👻 10:15pm austinrich: The snow didn't last, but our snow season is usually in Jan / Feb, so we will probably get more.
	👻 10:16pm austinrich: I like the "riff" this section of the story does on the "X-Minus One" opening theme.
	👻 10:17pm austinrich: How was that Neil Young show? I've never seen him, so I don't know his live reputation.
	10:18pm Rokudenashi: @Mr. X That's amazing, although he's somewhat local, it's hard to imagine Neil Young playing in what was likely Salinas High School gym.
	10:18pm Mr. X: It was excellent. He had just released Trans, so there was lots of weird vocoder stuff. Some audience members left in disgust.

	10:20pm Mr. X: Yep. "Computer Age" is so nerdy and prophetic.
	10:21pm Mr. X: But never mind all that. It's Shot Reverse Shot! Sci fi music at its finest.
	👻 10:21pm austinrich: While not dramatically different from the album mix, Shot Reverse Shot actually did a slight re-mix of this tune for this radio show. Though I'm not sure people would notice unless they do a side-by-side comparison.

	👻 10:34pm austinrich: The time that I saw Low, their daughter was off stage, and kept running around on the stage, crying, laughing, getting more applause than the band. It was sort of weird... the saddest songs in the world... and this baby, running around. It was so strange.
	10:34pm Derek Westerholm: Always a fan of Low. Played Just Like Christmas from their Christmas album last week on our show. Their new album pushes into distorted territory. It's a severe effect for an entire album, but also a bold choice and an interesting one. (Sorry, not trying to hijack the moon talk here.)

	10:37pm Derek Westerholm: One of my concert regrets was missing Low. I was supposed to see them somewhere around the turn of the millennium, but was sick, so I decided to bail. Always sad to look at unused tickets, a concert without one or two occupants.
	10:37pm Rokudenashi: @DJBabs - you're very kind! The prospect of starting over is quite exciting...I'll be able to tune into Mini-Mutations more!
	👻 10:38pm austinrich: The Weatherman inspired this Fats Waller track. He and I chat on the phone fairly often, and he mentioned that Fats is one of his favorite musicians. When I saw The Weatherman DJ in Seattle on Halloween a few years ago, he played several fats selections.
	10:38pm Derek Westerholm: I feel like Low have some edge & humour about them. There's a lot of sad, "slowcore" bands that lack their depth, in my opinion.
	👻 10:39pm austinrich: Low is funnier than most people give them credit. You gotta have a sense of humor to do what they do.
	👻 10:43pm austinrich: Stella Star is a DJ and broadcaster here in Salem, Oregon, and can be heard on KMUZ fairly often. They've been doing radio for... ages...
	10:44pm Mr Fab: ANOTHER Sheena's DJ who knows The Weatherman. He's quite friendly, it seems. Has he ever had his own radio show?
	👻 10:46pm austinrich: I don't think The Weatherman has ever done his own show, outside of Over The Edge with Don Joyce. But I've got a couple interviews I did with him... I should re-listen to the one about his early years.
	👻 10:48pm austinrich: I know he did some shows with Richard, just the two of them. But. I think those were just OTE shows, too.
	👻 10:48pm austinrich: I used to work in an aviary, so this story spoke to me.
	👻 10:51pm austinrich: I blame the Ramen City Kid - friend of the show - for introducing me to Richard Brautigan. The fact he used to live in Eugene only convinced me that I could write Brautigans too, if I tried. I collected my Brautigans in a book in 2008, that I lost money on in every sense of the words. I'm not sure I really succeeded - I was reading too much Calvino and Borges in those days, too, so the stories are... well.. like a young man who drinks too much, aping someone else's style.

	👻 10:56pm austinrich: Ramen City Kid is still around. (We did a show together a few episodes ago.) Lives in PDX. Owns his own house. Has a steady job that allows him to work from home. He's doing pretty good, in my mind.

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Only now do I realize that there's a bit of a garage undercurrent.

	👻 9:30pm austinrich: While I am a fan of all of Greg Sage's output, I think "The Power in One" was overlooked by a lot of people because it came out at a weird time, and he was selling the albums himself, and it just didn't hit as big as it could have. I think if it has gone over better, he might have been more enthusiastic about the future of The Wipers.
	9:32pm Mr. X: True, though I had quit the band before their sessions with HR. And BEFORE I joined the band (Stick Against Stone) the Bad Brains had let them use their practice space and park their bus in front, in NYC.
	👻 9:36pm austinrich: I saw "Bishop of Battle" open for Man... Or Astro-Man? in the 90's, and it was the first time I bought a burned CD from a band at a show. I remember thinking $5 seemed steep then. That CD still plays, and I still listen to this disc all the time. The drummer has played mostly in metal bands since then, namely in his band "Witch Mountain." He also writes comics, novels, and is a music critic in PDX. This was his second band.

	👻 9:45pm austinrich: I re-ripped that CDr earlier this year, and and played flawlessly. I think CD Burners in those days were made of sturdier stuff. I have a few CDs from that era that I burned via command line when I used to run Linux... those CDs are sturdy as hell.

	👻 9:48pm austinrich: I've been thinking of pitching an "Old Time Radio" show for Sheena. I was playing old Detective shows on my program a while back, and I sort of miss that... but they eat up a big chunk of the show each week if I play a full episode.
	9:49pm Rich in Washington: Re: CDRs. It also depends on what you burn them on. Generally, CDRs branded with an office supply store tend to self-destruct fairly quickly, as does anything with Memorex on it. I've been buying archival quality Taiyo Yuden blanks for about 15 years and I suspect they'll last a while.

	👻 9:50pm austinrich: To Rich's Point: I have some CDs that self-destructed very quickly. A lot of Noise and Experimental guys sell stuff on CDs that die after a couple years! I'm glad I make a habit of ripping a lot of stuff immediately, otherwise some 3" discs I bought would just be artifacts.

	9:57pm Krys O.: My old friend David Quinlan, who did a show on WFMU when I was a student at Upsala College in the early 80s did two things on his overnight show: he read When the Sleeper Wakes in segments and he would play whole Goon Show episodes. I don't know if other people liked it, but I was enthralled by both. Maybe you could do installments. Tune in next time and such

	👻 10:14pm austinrich: When I first got to KPSU in PDX, the "Lost In Translation" movie has just come out. EVERY DJ played this soundtrack, almost all the time. It was sort of a meme in the late 2004's / early 2005's.

It's a severe effect for an entire album, but also a bold choice and an interesting one. (Sorry, not trying to hijack the moon talk here.)

	👻 10:38pm austinrich: The Weatherman inspired this Fats Waller track. He and I chat on the phone fairly often, and he mentioned that Fats is one of his favorite musicians. When I saw The Weatherman DJ in Seattle on Halloween a few years ago, he played several fats selections.

	👻 10:46pm austinrich: I don't think The Weatherman has ever done his own show, outside of Over The Edge with Don Joyce. But I've got a couple interviews I did with him... I should re-listen to the one about his early years.

The fact he used to live in Eugene only convinced me that I could write Brautigans too, if I tried. I collected my Brautigans in a book in 2008, that I lost money on in every sense of the words. I'm not sure I really succeeded - I was reading too much Calvino and Borges in those days, too, so the stories are... well.. like a young man who drinks too much, aping someone else's style.
