@Passaic - about 15 years ago I was at a record show where I used to live in Michigan. When I walked in I made eye contact with my buddy who worked at the record store. He was at a dealer's table, had a dead serious look on his face and gave me "come over here" signal. I went over and looked through the crates he was at. It was filled with Strata East, Black Jazz and other heavy duty artists/labels. Get this - all priced at $2 a piece! I spent all my money at that table. And I picked the Kellee Patterson Black Jazz in the bunch.

“Guides” often appear in these trips, the plant entities Sheila describes are a manifestation of this. It’s very common to have these guides appear (and frequently they talk about light), it’s fascinating that you see so many different kinds of individual personalities reporting similar experiences when using these substances.

It was really cool for me to hear Sheila's use of mushrooms as a tool for insight and personal growth. I've never heard anyone describe it as Sheila did. I've heard "trips" recounted but mainly as a retelling of something funny, cool or bad happening. But mainly I've been around psychedelics used as a way to get annihilated (myself included). And it seemed like the only "benefit" of that was to be able to drink for another 6 hours.

These “guides” that seem to appear as benevolent, protective presences that accompany the psychedelic voyager, and help her interpret her experiences, are very commonly reported. Appearances of beings or emissaries from the plant world that can be helpful, mischievous, or deeply mysterious are also frequently experienced. I was fascinated that Sheila’s experiences seemed to combine these two elements into one: the plant beings ARE the guides.

ShelbyG (oh, also: Up the Runzas), you should take heart from Sheila's experience with building up to the big one, then. I was speaking from seeing microdosing mostly recommended as a way to feel like one's not working when one is working, which is the slippery slope to the Matrix and Brave New World. But purposefully employed for self-discovery? Let's wrest the methods of capitalism back for the people! They can't steal our drugs and get away with it!

This is way out of sync with the show, but I thought I had recognized La Chanson d"Helene but wasn't following the playlist, so it didn't click until Sheila just mentioned it. Our greatest discovery watching a film most nights since the pandemic started was how much we loved Claude Sautet. I think he is up there with Lelouch, Godard, Blier, Truffaut and the greatest New Wave directors. La Chanson d'Helene comes from the sublime Les Choses de la Vie. I have watched all of his films twice in the past eighteen months - Vincent, Francois, Paul et les Autres just last week. Most of his films are on Kanopy (the best steaming deal in the world) and Criterion. I had to send of for a bootleg copy of Classe Tout Risques. He is amazing. Thank you Sheila for highlighting his genius in an indirect way.

I know what I'm going to do after 6:00. Explore some musical tripiness. When Sheila B spoke of her MDMA experience (on this show or on a podcast?) she said that she learned that "there is no death." And what the short story "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang/film "Arrival" shows, is that "there is no Time." I know I will feel both tonight.

Sheila, I think Lana Del Rey is the great artist of the past ten years and the most consistent. Greil Marcus thinks she has been making one very long album.
