@Little Danny.. The long way around that questions is... I played trumpet as a kid, so that did help some. My dad played sax as well and his favorite player was Pharoah Sanders. Even though I didn't see him much as a kid, the outtings we had were to the Montreaux Detroit Jazz Fest each year. So I think for me it was exposure to live players first. But LPs that floored me: Ornette Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come changed the way I listened to jazz.
The first time I heard the Art Ensemble of Chicago was impactful - I was about 19.
