Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

All right, all right ALL RIGHT!!!
Great records, the Shapiro Tzadik albums. Have seen his Ribs and Brisket review a few times, including the last New Year show at the old City Winery. Highly recommended, fun show (but won't be in the NY area to get there this year)

Hadn't heard Cornelia Street closed, COVID casualty, I expect. It was a really nice spot, saw a good number of shows there.

Just went to @WR's link (7:09); 2 questions:
1) is that strictly an online show? (looks that way from the link)
2) Dave, did you get rid of much of that beard?????
  7:41pm
Paul Shapiro:

The mIcroscopic Septet, with Dave Sewelson on bari and myself on tenor. Many fun gigs! Joel Forrester wrote this one.

Mambo Bob welcome to the Free World!
  7:48pm
Paul Shapiro:

That's me playing on an early Queen Latifah record. I particularly like this track. I'd play a couple of solos on the track and the producer 'Louie Louie' Vega would pick a few parts and sample them throughout the tune.

Mambo Bob:

Nice sounds in his world.

In a long life of great live music experiences one of the best shows I attended was Paul’s Shofarot live at the Eldridge Street Synagogue. Masterful tunes, arrangements, musicians, atmosphere and acoustics! Unforgettable. They guys invited me to Krakow but I couldn’t make it... Great to hear this! Paul always brings it.

I found the location where Slim Gaillard lived when he came to Detroit at 16 and was taken in by an Armenian (I think) family. On Woodward Avenue in Highland Park. The row of small shops is gone though the new building resembles them. This family inspired his many food songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Dave Sewelson:

Wow, Mambo Bob......what's there now?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
WR:

Very interesting Mambo Bob, before your comment I had never looked up Gaillard's early bio before.
  8:49pm
Paul Shapiro:

Slim's bio is amazing. He was supposedly left by his father in Greece?? Slim was an amazing multitalent. He had a record store, produced records and was part of the bebop scene, particularly in LA. Check out the clip of him and Slam Stewart in Hellzapoppin' YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
WR:

Y'all making me hungry.
  8:59pm
Paul Shapiro:

And thats just breakfast and lunch!
  9:05pm
Mambo Bob:

I think a financial firm is in the location. Highland Park is just north of Detroit and still in duress. For a crazy surreal documentary/travelogue about Slim’s life watch Slim Gaillard’s Civilisation, produced in the UK and filmed around the US late in Slim’s life. With Dizzy and others. Crazy weird and fun. 4-part series, findable on YouTube. This is the first, I believe, and includes Detroit and a late life visit to the family that took him in. With food! Phenomenal.

Paul, did you have to do any ask to use the "of Mrs. Maisel" in the description of your gigs. Have you had any interaction with the show?
  9:38pm
Paul Shapiro:

We are playing music that was used in the show but it is covered by ASCAP and BMI licenses.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm

Yes, they don't own the songs.

Would like to hear the music for the film. What is the name of the film again?
  9:51pm

Film is His People Unfortunately it is not available, just when we play it! I would love to record it and have it locked to picture but that hasn't happened yet.
  9:52pm
Paul Shapiro:

We do perform it every so often. I hope soon again.
