A trio of string players on this Andrew Hill delight: Selwart Clarke (viola), Alfred Brown (violin), and Kermit Moore (cello). These three men have appeared on many hundreds (thousands?) of recordings. Go-to session men, able to play in any style and context. And each were elite orchestral/symphonic players

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am

On this Ken McIntyre record, Selwart Clarke is credited simply as "concermaster." There is an uncredited 13-piece string section included. He is most likely playing viola. Typically the 1st violinist is concertmaster. Clarke was an abundantly talented man.

Of course, Ornette would soon be doing occasional things with a violin that many fans of his saxophone playing were not quite fans of. I think criticism of Ornette's violin playing is rank silliness. The man was making sounds with deep emotion and knowledge no matter the instrument. You can't love Ornette the saxist but not Ornette the violinist. My decision is final.

The most string (violin, viola, cello) players hate the bass players. They would never let them in the party. (I know this on good authority from my daughter the violist.)
Avatar 10:30am
Listener Gregory:

Doug, the Ornette string compositions are a real contribution of his. But when he picked up the violin in the middle of a concert, it was often just unclear (to me) what we were supposed to get from it. I never felt that way with his alto playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am

With masters like Ornette Coleman, and Billie Holiday, and Charlie Parker, all who have been ridiculed for the appreciation of and collaboration with strings, I start from the position that what they are putting out there is a work of significance and importance. It is up to me to find my way to both acceptance and pleasuretaking.

I'm not arguing with you! But understanding cannot just be willed. I probably missed something in a critical period of my youth. Anyway, it's not like I turn off the CD player or write to my newspaper every time Ornette plays the violin—I just wait for comprehension and appreciation to come to me, like the grace of God. (That also has not yet arrived.)

Yeah, speaking of Charlie Parker, by playing violin, the music Ornette was creating would not be heard in context of how does this sound post Charlie Parker.

Regarding one's response to listening to Ornette's violin playing, 🎻 perhaps helpful to not think of Ornette but to listen as if it is someone else that was inspired by Ornette. And understanding, perhaps not the appropriate word.
Avatar 10:50am

@bobdc, if we're talking violas, let me mention the recent work of Jessica Pavone, which lives in a world in between classical and improvisation. She has a number of good albums out in the past couple of years.

Heard a report -- from someone briefly in her employ -- of Roberta being mean and impatient, unfortunately. Maybeee...it was just that day, because that's how brief the job was. Not sure we don't hear these things about male singers too. Sinatra was testy. James Brown was a real taskmaster and used rehearsals as punishment. I think maybe the difference is that the male behavior is accepted as a cost of being talented, and the female behavior is not.
