Read recently that 1922 was the last year in the USA that horse ownership out numbered automobile ownership. So those 1908 recordings were well before autos were common experience for folks.

I do think The Netherlands is beautiful, even though no mountains or sandy beaches. They have the best-designed cities I've ever seen. Functional for everybody. The bicycle usage alone makes me want to move there
