There are different kinds of "deep cleaning": One is regular prophylaxis, which doesn't cost much and should probably be done at least 2x a year. Then there are certain deeper kinds, whose names escape me, and which could perhaps be a form of pick-pocketing. Bottom line, if it's not the regular prophylaxis, then ask for them what the justification is, and then ... chew on it for a bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

BWAHAHAHA great Seinfeld impression. But I probably just like it because I don't get Seinfeld at all and I always thought his show was a punk-ass fool parade.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm

I almost never go to the dentist. I am *always* suspicious that they're all punk-ass fools who are ripping me off! Prophylaxis, really? Is that totally necessary? I've got a nice electric toothbrush, isn't that good enough? (Fuck our health care system.)
Avatar 10:58pm
Constantly Choking:

yes dude!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Sam Segal:

@CC: It's a good question. I don't usually get nervous, because I've been doing a weekly radio show pretty consistently since I was a sophomore in high school, so it is sort of second nature to me at this point. I do get nervous if I am ever going to interview someone or have a co-host (as I have during the marathon a few times over the years). It also helps that I am usually broadcasting from the comfort of my own apartment.
  10:58pm
Pie:

Punk ass food parade if you ask me. When I go to the dentist, I know what I’m getting. Prophylaxis. And maybe my permanent retainer put back in, might also need an Invisalign’s before hand.

Red beans with brown rice here. Cheese and pico de gallo on top with flour tortillas and corn tortilla chips. WR and I are in the same zone.

Hey Sam!
  11:00pm
headcleaner:

Even Presidents gotta floss, Ike. So no, just brushing isn't enough. As for prophylaxis being strictly 'necessary', I don't actually know, but again it's not expensive, and the difference (before/after) is quite noticeable, in terms of all-around grodiness in those parts, I find
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
I k e:

Oh I definitely floss. I floss a lot.

BTW I've been seeing a good dentist, non-pick-pocketing, reasonably priced, in the Gramercy Park area -- if anyone wants a referral, drop me a message via my profile page + I'll get back to you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Sam Segal:

The deeper reason I am suspicious of my dentist is that they recently recommended a gum surgery that would cost me $10,000 out-of-pocket. I have a bit of a gum recession issue, but I seriously doubt I am in bad enough shape to justify a ten-grand surgery!

Sam, my mother just got taken for a $10,000 ride. she was 85 years old when the process started (87 now). i guess her dentist figured he better move on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Sam Segal:

Wow, Chresti, we really do live in a stupid and cruel country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Sam Segal:

I'm sorry to hear that, coel. Due to my midwestern naivete, I never realized until recently that there are so many crook dentists out there!
  11:08pm

sad to hear your friend took that route, chresti. teeth are mega-important - not just for obvious reasons, but for the whole digestive + immune system. that's why I don't she crocodile tears about the 20k or so bill for some work I've had done recently.

Hot take: the 90s sitcom totem pole:
Early Simpsons (brilliant) >
Red Dwarf (awesomely weird British sci-fi comedy) >
Futurama (good) >
ummm maybe Just Shoot Me and Drew Carey (OK) >
Seinfeld (overrated) >
Friends (wildly overrated) >
all the garbage that came on in the protected timeslots after Seinfeld and Friends, except Just Shoot Me.

I'm forgetting a bunch of stuff.

  11:11pm
headcleaner:

And to everyone within the sound of my voice: There are these things known as "teaching schools", that can be a life-saver to anyone needing dental work but short on cash. They don't generally advertise, and the bureaucracy can be a minor nightmare to deal with -- but they can save your financial skin (as well as your teeth), if you wind up in a bad spot. Specifically here in Gotham we have NYU Langone -- again, they're not fun to deal with at the bureaucracy level -- but they will get the job done (and done quite well) at a reasonable cost.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Sam Segal:

@Ike, I confess, I am a lover of the sitcom "Seinfeld," less of a fan of Jerry Seinfeld's stand-up. But I'd like to nominate The Larry Sanders Show for inclusion toward the top of your list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth∅:

i think one probably gets better care at a school than an established office, generally. they're trying harder, the knowledge is fresh, and there's always an experienced dentist watching over.

Part of me wonders if some dental providers are trying to make up for income they lost during the worst stage of the pandemic, when nobody was going in for routine care or more expensive surgeries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
iҜ乇:

@CC, are there Americans constantly trying to catfish you Canadians on dating apps so they can get married and move up there for that famous general healthcare? If not, there will be.
  11:17pm
headcleaner:

coel∅ - the care I got at NYU Langone was quite good in fact - but at a certain other local school (which I won't name), where I also generally got good care... I had someone give me a spurious recommendation to pull out an incisor (that's one of your very front teeth!) when it definitely did not need to be (i.e. the student dentist was dead wrong on that one). So you have to keep your eyes open and get 2nd recs for anything that sounds iffy and or ... painful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
coelacanth∅:

one strategy i use that may or may not work is when i go to a new dentist the first thing i say is "i wont be getting any root canals so don't tell me if you think about recommending one."
so far (and i go to a different dentist every time i go to one) i've never had crazy shit recommended, despite vertical abrasion, never flossing, and my roots growing into my sinuses and my jaw.

- but then last winter an experienced dentist in a busy office with other healthcare providers dropped the adhesive down my throat - and presumably never knew, despite my intense gagging. so, aside from poisoning me (i did get seriously ill a few weeks later...maybe related, maybe not) the filling came out within hours.
