@hyde: Not sure, but I believe that space will be at least partly used as the terminal room - where all of the heavy machinery used to run the radio station will be moved to. All that stuff is currently on the second floor.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:25am
chresti:

Morning Jeff and d:OUTers!
🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:25am
WR:

@9:52 @Listener Gregory: The Japanese app was of no help regarding your question but the bandcamp listing for another of their releases on Discus provides some insight worth sharing:

discusmusic.bandcamp.com...

The Geordie Approach is 2 Norwegians and a Geordie. They met in Leeds and play improvised music. They have been doing it since the early 00s. The name? A stupid comment about the correct volume to operate amplifiers (loud enough to disrupt all surrounding activity and stimulate acts of desperate violence) that became a kind of mantra to how the band would approach its performances and recordings.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26am
Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
We are the Bad Moose Luck brothers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am
Jeff Golick:

I think a version more typically reviews to a dub version of a tune, using the same rhythm but messing with (or eliminating) the vocals.
Avatar 🥁 10:26am
Listener Gregory:

@WR, thanks. It seems that Yagi was a guest just for that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am
Jeff Golick:

  10:26am
Listener Robert:

Actually I wonder why more covers generally aren't called "versions" once they're recorded and published.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am
Jeff Golick:

@Doug: it's a curse, but also gives one a reason to keep on going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am
Jeff Golick:

I'm a tad underprepared given the holiday and such, so am going to forego the full playlist edit for now. Will go back and fill in all details later.
  10:30am
DJpeterDE:

@jeff Yeah that makes more sense for all the Scratch Perry “versions.” So a “remix” is the same vocal but different backing, and a “version” is typically the reverse?
  10:30am
Listener Robert:

I think it's the rise of the singer-songwriter (or performers-composers) in the 20th Century that popularized the concept of the "cover" as distinct from what THEY were doing. Cf. Leonard Bernstein's attempt to define classical music as "exact" (i.e. composer-specified) music.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:30am
Doug Schulkind:

If there were a moose nearby, she'd recommend cranking the volume a bit with these Jamaican nuggets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Jeff Golick:

(Thanks to that kind moose.)
  10:33am
Listener Robert:

It wasn't until I'd say at least the 1960s that people expected every little garage band to have some compositions of their own.
  10:37am
Listener Robert:

Tell me if it isn't true that these days a little out-of-the-way band could be playing some dive, and there'll be people in the audience who'll diss them if they don't include an original comp or two among all the covers they're playing, UNLESS they bill themselves SPECIFICALLY as a cover act.
  10:41am
Listener Robert:

I'm sure I've heard Gaylord Fields talk about this, though his perspective on it differs from mine, plus he's got waaaay more )and more attentive) listening experience than me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am

WR, I love how Godard set up a visually stylish shot in the studio with The Stones, then cut to those ridiculous scenes in the junk yard with the revolutionaries. Was he just yanking the chain? Who knows and who cares, it was compelling to watch.

@doc: I don't think I would be able to tell that latkes had been made with Whole Foods schmaltz, but I share your concern that they will lack soul. OTOH even Richard Nixon has got soul.

TIL: Remote library storage actually does order books by height, so that all the space in a shelf will be used up. Computer records tell the exact location so that the book can be retrieved. But if you were to go browsing (which is not allowed), you'd find completely unrelated books shelved together. Huh!

@LG at every big middle class market I visited on Monday (Costco, Shoprite) -- completely cleaned out of butter and cream.

From the article: “DJ Scholarship”—a term I coined in 2013 to describe a mix-mode research practice, both performative and subversive in its ability to shape and define social experiences, shifting the public perception of the role of a DJ from being a purveyor of party music to an archivist and information specialist. As DJs, we assess, collect, organize, and provide access to music determined to have long-term value. Record store as graduate school.
Avatar 11:42am
johnec:

Hell yeah Franco!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43am
DJpeterDE:

DJ Scholarship was in part inspired by the troubling fact that Black women and queer DJs are missing from hip hop’s most popularized origin stories. DJ Scholarship is a way for me, a Black queer woman, to spin a blend of thoughts and ideas about race and gender into the dominant narrative of what a DJ is in the collective imagination—a cis heterosexual man.

Speaking of what fowlz is up to, there was a wild turkey crossing the active street and navigating the busy sidewalk a couple blocks away from Harvard Square on Friday, and then another pair was seen further along Mass Ave. a few minutes later. Choosing Black Friday stress, why?

Further on in the article:
A Detroit-based group from Compton, California called The Jackson Sisters (no relation to Michael), recorded “Rock Steady” in 1976, and it appears on their only studio album titled “The Jackson Sisters.” Another group from Jamaica, The Marvels, recorded a reggae version of the song “Rock Steady” in 1972. Four notable funky jazz versions of “Rock Steady” performed by arranger Julius Brockington; organ player, Johnny Hammond; jazz musician, Frank Owens and Charles Keynard, a jazz musician, speaks to the song’s relevance in the world of music beyond what could be considered its niche audience.
