Last night, I got second row seats to a screening of Dune at the MoMA, and afterwards Villenueve and Oscar Isaacs came on stage for a short talk, during which Villenueve started talking about Oscar's last costume, one he'd stolen from the set, and pulled from his coat pocket a plastic bag containing Oscar Isaac's cock sock.

It was grand.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm

The same director did Arrival, which I liked well enough, but he also did Prisoners, which was an excruciating wasted of time. I mean, Gyllenhaal as a cop decides to race a girl in a regular car without sirens or lights across icy roads rather than just RADIOING FOR AN AMBULANCE, just for the frantic driving sequence. Dumb
Avatar 4:03pm
Fox:

Noooooo. Don't be warned off the sequels. Frank Herbert's whole story arc was split up into the first three books. He originally pitched it to his editor as one, and the editor made him spread it out.

Tim: the movie is amazing at aesthetics, pacing, tone. the acting feels a bit wooden. Not crazy about the Baron. But the music and sound design and the visuals had a serious impact.

I don't know if it's good. I don't know if this is appealing to anyone who wasn't a fan of the books (and the Lynch film).

The movie looks whatever. I mean, it cost hundreds of millions of dollars. It better look good.
I think the entire plot and everything about Dune is lame and corny and the writing makes Tolkien look dynamic.
Sorry!
Avatar 4:12pm
Fox:

Creamo - I .... don't HATE the new Blade Runner. I feel like that movie was as good as a Blade Runner sequel could have been. It kept the right sense of bleakness, some color palette, it felt like it took place in the same world (unlike, say Star Trek vs TNG), and it had long shots and didn't get cut to shit like most modern films.

I can't be arbitrary about it, given my love for the original and for PKD. I can't see clearly through my own tastes and personal fervor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm

The big question is does Dune knock Spaceballs off the top of all time greatest space movies?

C'mon, Blade Runner sucked!
You don't have to like it just cuz you like the thing it's from.
Call it ou. It was boring as shit, looked like a sci-fi novel cover made flesh. I mean, that's OK.
But, like, how about a good story?
Avatar 4:14pm

Seriously though, the STAR of the film is the soundtrack. The sound and the shots instill a kind of koyaanisqatsi impact.

Yeah, the new Blade Runner took me three tries to watch to the end. I kept falling asleep. I couldn't get enough whisky in me to make it to the end because I really didn't care what was there. And I deeply love the original.
Avatar 4:15pm
Creamo Coyl:

But they are making an Incal thing I guess.
Even a shitty version of that will be better than Dune.
Avatar 4:15pm
Fox:

Creamo - To be fair, I think the original is just as boring as shit. It's terribly slow paced. There's little dialogue. It just looks amazing. The new one isn't as good because we aren't impressed by that level of set design or universe building as we used to be.

I got into a lot of trouble for saying that I liked Lynch's version better - I read ALL the books; it's just that the Lynch version gives you more info to follow along if you DIDN'T read the book. When I saw it with a friend of mine who had not read the book, he had sooooooooooooo many questions. NONE of the new DUNE makes sense if you didn't really read the books - not enough background given along the way.

Villanueve also did Sicario. I like that movie a lot.

I personally thought the new Dune was really cool. Like Fox said earlier, the visuals and music alone were amazing. It made it worth the watch for me.

I was enuff of a SciFi geek I subscribed to Starlog & was hyped for StarWars *before* it came out (1977). It was gonna be 2001 Xs Tolkien & everything you could imagine. Well - it was some of that. & - it became the trendiest thing ever w/ lines round the block &tc. I went right off it - before the 2nd film was even done.

Also, Rev Rab, I don't think it's possible, and it flies in the face of the author's politics and aesthetics, but a movie of Perdido Street Station, if somehow done well (which I really don't even think is possible for Hollywood anymore and is probably pointless then for smaller makers), would be fascinating.

But given that you really need an outsider for any chance of it being any good at all, best to scale down the grandeur of the story ... Hard to Be a God by the Strugatsky brothers could be a good, small, paranoid, grainy movie.

Handy, it would be interesting to see how any of Mieville's books would translate to film, though he probably wouldn't agree and the places are almost more important than the characters, which would make it even trickier.
