I was with my mom at Newberry's when I got the banana album in a cut-out bin for a dollar. When I got it home there was a James Bond soundtrack record inside. The following week I went back to the store with my mom to get another copy with hopefully the right record inside. All The Velvet Underground albums were gone so I settled for a record by Ultimate Spinach. When my sister and I listened to it in the living room we started laughing so hard we were gasping for air. I threw it up onto the roof.

The trick is to be "self indulgent", and to still get people interested in it. Or maybe not...

Hmmm.... I work in the contemporary art world and have found that the best work seems to require a real belief of the artist in the work they're producing. Not sure if that equals self-indulgence. Of course some of the worst work is made by artists who have a real belief in what they're doing too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
coelacanth∅:

Bach is certainly not an example; but maybe we can say that someone who composes music solely for income, and not for artistry, may not be self-indulgent. (ie someone who creates bland crap music for being put on hold in a phone system)
