	🥁 10:00am StringOFperils: Just when you thought it was scat, it gets scatter!
	10:00am Doug Schulkind: Vivid description of the song "Everything Scatter": The lyric of "Everything Scatter" portrays Nigeria’s conflicted society through metaphor and microcosm: an argument supposedly taking place among the passengers on a bus going past Kalakuta Republic. One of the passengers voices the military regime’s accusation that Fela and his followers are political troublemakers, prostitutes, weed smokers and hooligans. Another person defends Fela, saying it is better to be a troublemaker than a sell-out. The rest of the passengers take sides and pandemonium ensues, causing the driver to take the bus to a police station. “Uniform start to yab,” sings Fela, “(saying) bring me the Fela people, make I lock am and charge am for court, before I shut am big mouth for am, before I hand am to mosquito.” Fela’s use of “mosquito” refers to the malarial swamps close to which some Nigerian prisons were sited and also to that name being used to describe policemen.

	10:12am TDK60: I first heard Fela from a US fellow musician who'd borrowed a Fela LP from Nigerian exchange students. (1978?). When they found out we dug it, we were invited to Nigerian students' record parties.

	10:17am Doug Schulkind: I can remember the first time I heard Fela, too, Jeff Golick. One of my closest friends (and radio comrades) in college, John Levine, went to Nigeria for a semester abroad. He spent 3+ months hanging out and smoking spliffs at Fela's nightclub The Shrine. John came back and handed me a Fela LP and blew my mind. This was '81.

It relies too heavily on footage of Bill T. Jones' Broadway show "Fela!," but it tells a solid story. And the archival footage is eye-and-ear-popping.

	11:14am Doug Schulkind: I highly recommend the quasi-biography of Fela written by his close friend Carlos Moore. It's called "Fela Fela This Bitch of a Life." It was published in 1982, so much of Fela's later exploits aren't covered. But the voice of the book, telling the story, is as close to the voice of Fela himself. An amazing book. Speaking of amazing.... ARB!

	10:00am Doug Schulkind: Vivid description of the song "Everything Scatter": The lyric of "Everything Scatter" portrays Nigeria’s conflicted society through metaphor and microcosm: an argument supposedly taking place among the passengers on a bus going past Kalakuta Republic. One of the passengers voices the military regime’s accusation that Fela and his followers are political troublemakers, prostitutes, weed smokers and hooligans. Another person defends Fela, saying it is better to be a troublemaker than a sell-out. The rest of the passengers take sides and pandemonium ensues, causing the driver to take the bus to a police station. “Uniform start to yab,” sings Fela, “(saying) bring me the Fela people, make I lock am and charge am for court, before I shut am big mouth for am, before I hand am to mosquito.” Fela’s use of “mosquito” refers to the malarial swamps close to which some Nigerian prisons were sited and also to that name being used to describe policemen.

	10:12am TDK60: I first heard Fela from a US fellow musician who'd borrowed a Fela LP from Nigerian exchange students. (1978?). When they found out we dug it, we were invited to Nigerian students' record parties.

It was published in 1982, so much of Fela's later exploits aren't covered. But the voice of the book, telling the story, is as close to the voice of Fela himself. An amazing book. Speaking of amazing.... ARB!
