Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
coelacanth∅:

i've wondered about when a composer plays "as guest" on one of his (in this case) own songs how that affects the treatment that the "host" (Rollins in this case) artist may have in mind for a song.
(i know it often is not that arrangement, and the same recording might also be on a Monk album or even a Blakey album...but it does happen)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
coelacanth∅:

...like, Monk generally lingers on the end of misterioso, but what if Sonny would've preferred to end it differently?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Franco Twinkie:

With Crager mags no less! Is it for sale?
Avatar 1:23pm
Stork:

Not sure if they both (Monk and Silver) really play on that, Jeff - totally confused on that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
coelacanth∅:

Jeff really? i guess i wasn't listening that closely and didn't notice...but, who'd want to play a piano solo with Monk around?? on a Mont tune?!!
takes some guts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
adamdoesit:

coel, that's way above my pay grade about guest and host; but right at the beginning of that "Misterioso," it sounded like Monk shifted from one tempo to another… I wondered if there was some misalignment at the outset, and if the end of the track was a way of playing with/discussing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco i culled this a few years ago for my desktop. i think it was for sale, but that was then...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm

@adadoesit, you probably already know this, but per Ethan Iverson: “Evidence” is based on the older standard, “Just You, Just Me.” In case you aren’t hip: “Just You, Just Me” = “Just Us” = “Justice” = “Evidence.”

I heard something about this album (Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane) packaging - like there were souviner stamps inside - that people then started using to post letters. The label was issued an injunction to recall the records so packaged, and not to do that ever again. I hope it's true.

And I think this is the only recording of All Alone.

Is there a street or something somewhere named after Monk? There should be
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm

fred, it oughta be a roundabout, like the Place Charles de Gaulle.

We should just change the name of our planet to Monk.

@adamdoesit: Man, I was born in Paris but didn't realize that dreadful place was named "Place Charles de Gaulle". It's a subway stop to me, and I've had no reason to stop there unless to switch to another line to go to a show (usually at the Japanese cultural center)

If we changed the name of the planet to Monk, would we all be Monklings?
Avatar 3:05pm
Stork:

@yerfriendpaul: but can you "find the cracks in the middle of the diatonic scale, right there, on the keyboard" as Cassandra Wilson so perfectly put it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm

I think I might originally be from planet Monk. It’s a different place for different people. But somehow I ended up here instead and I can’t find my way back!
Avatar 3:07pm

@Mx. Baba Bee (e/they): - yes, and if you were a straight-shooter, we'd say you're a "down-to-Monk person."

What on Monk were you thinking?!

Not only was his music great, he had the best song titles.

There, children's feet actively seek out cracks between squares of pavement, which are not, anyhow, square, but composed of rectangles dark and light, small and large.

Jon Hendricks wrote some great lyrics for this tune. Probably the only guy who could.
Avatar 3:17pm
Stork:

Apparently, Monk didn't always give names to his compositions, and wasn't always ready with ideas as to what to call them. Hence song titles like "Bye-Ya" - named for a Latino engineer who kept yelling Vaya" - let's go; "Let's Call This" is a title that needs no explanation - cuz there ain't none.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
yerfriendpaul:

I’m sure you’ve all seen them but if you haven’t , search online for Monk’s notes to his band. They’re so great and I think many of them reach beyond just music.

On that planet, we'd celebrate Monk Day every April, always in Paris. Climate change would be a matter of too hot a tempo.

Better cut me off, barkeep.

There's security in this place? Joking aside, that reminds me of a bouncer at New Morning in Paris. Smartly dressed, friendly but no nonsense, I haven't been there in years but how often is the bouncer one of your fave memories of a venue?
