All those old school studies about roadrage - & how if you pass human on a sidewalk - you exchange signals about space & it rarely goes badly. But in cars - that's eliminated. I can at least tell you that motorists in and around NYC have been absolutely out of their minds more recently, moreso than usual. The statistics bear out that moving and parking violations are way down as well in NYC, so as usual, NYPD is actively making life more dangerous for the citizens who pay them for alleged protection and service, not to mention cops are by far the most aggressive, entitled, and dangerous drivers. This kind of aggression is extremely intimidating as a pedestrian or cyclist. What an ordeal you had. Scary, infuriating. With smartphones at least, it probably doesn't help that most of the way parents blow off steam nowadays seems to be messing around on smartphones while idling in a vehicle and waiting to pick up a kid, or something along those lines. Drives me crazy to see some city employee idling in a car and playing games on a phone, especially when it's NYPD, especially when it's NYPD sitting in like a bike lane or smack in the middle of a park.

When I'm on the highway I have a game called "how many seconds." I move into the passing lane (while traveling about 73mph) and count the seconds until a giant truck is riding my bumper. Whenever I move over so they can pass, 9 times out of 10 they have bumper stickers that suggest that most people that drive those trucks are pretty unified in their politics and prejudices. I'll also add that we have a growing epidemic of oversized cars in this country, and it grows worse and worse. Notice how many car commercials almost exclusively or exclusively advertise large vehicles. Even sedans are getting bigger, but the SUV and pickup truck trend is killing pedestrians, which is to say nothing of the environment. By giving the types of people who would immediately jump to road rage these huge vehicles, with like no additional training or regulations of any kind required, we're creating a recipe for disaster. Now add in distractions from cell phones and onboard car entertainment systems too. Also this attitude we see with a lot of anti-vaxxers, that anything the person doesn't feel like doing is considered a violation of individual liberties, most certainly does not help the road rage problem.

Of course I only have anecdotal evidence, but yes Mark, I believe the level of general rage in the US has been sharply on the rise. I really noticed it the morning after the 2016 election-- I was crossing a main downtown street on foot when the traffic was totally clear, when suddenly a truck turns the corner and guns it. He switched lanes to the one I was in and continued to accelerate. I had to get the F outta the way.

Was JUST typing that out, Revolution Rabbit Nov63. One thing I noticed about that video was that the campaign had a bus and someone in an SUV, I'm almost positive. Could have been a very different situation if the campaign had smaller cars, which also just speaks to this issue of everyone getting into an arms race with who can get a car that's more and more like a tank. More heavy, more powerful, higher profile. And again, massive recipe for disaster to give total psychos way too easy access to these dangerous and deadly weapons, which can be modified to be even more dangerous and deadly (like raising a truck). Lot of parallels with the gun industry, not to mention that these road rage motorists may be carrying guns in their vehicles.

I can't tell whether or not there's more rage these days, whether here in Canada, the US, wherever. As far as criminal stats go (for what they're worth), I thought things are less violent than 30 or 40 or 50 years ago. Is it the *kind* of rage that we think is getting worse? Off the top of my head, is individualized, atomized rage worse than it used to be (your run-of-the-mill road rage, your "I wanna speak to the manager!")? As far as collective rage goes, I guess "worse" depends on what you're raging against. I dunno. I don't get out enough to see rage firsthand.

regarding "suv"s -i've said it since the early 80s that people should have to pass an extra driving test, and suvs should be charged higher tolls and be surcharged by the state for the considerably less safe traffic environment, more casualties and damage in collisions, considerably greater impact on the ecology of the planet, and considerably more wear & tear on the roads.

All I know is that I love walking around with a portable radio. It's so amazing sometimes to see people's reactions, thinking people don't use them anymore or not even knowing exactly what it is until I explain it. I always find it really interesting when you stumble across your more mundane "conspiracies," so to speak, like how the telecommunication and media companies do everything in their power to make sure people don't realize just how much amazing free over-the-air radio and TV content there is, not to mention stuff that's free with an internet connection. Granted not every media market in the country is great, and some people have reception problems, but generally speaking, it's just a lot of fun to feel as if I'm gaming the system and these megacorporations. And of course the lack of tracking that comes with the current over-the-air TV and radio standards doesn't hurt either.

First I heard of "coal ".

On the LIE since CoVid, way more aggro driving, racing, lack of cooperation & all most no traffic stops by cops.

In NYC, is a plague of "straight pipes" exhaust mods on cars - gives 100db + burst of sound followed by machine gun backfires ... Illegal but not enforced .... Thanks NYPD

An even scarier practice is the below, which slows the trucK very quickly and produces huge noise and smoke ...
From wikiP: .... Compression-release ("Jake") braking, a form of engine braking used almost exclusively on diesel engines, produces extreme amounts of noise pollution if there is no muffler on the intake manifold of the engine. Anecdotally, it sounds similar to a jackhammer, however the loudness is between 10 and 20 times the sound pressure level of a jackhammer (10 to 13 dB greater).
