In an interview, Lennon pushed back against what he saw as various people associated with TheBeatles trying to take credit for what they accomplished - saying show him they did without them. In the case of Producer George Martin - one answer is America. Fwiw.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...though - erm - Martin didn't do that one...
Avatar 🦇 8:44pm

i was thinking that somewhere in the 70s production got really slick and america fits well into that. Just comparing like early EJ to even Yellow Brick Road. each album gets slicker, and somehow it loses its fire.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah I usually hate that.

A staple of my reaction-to-production examples is the Cars. Their demo tape was getting airplay on Boston FM radio for a while. Then when the first studio album came out and I heard some of the same songs with such fat studio and tech flavors, I thought, "Whoa, whoa, nowwww...overdone there, boys!" Took some time before the produced sound was the more familiar profile in the ears.

A long long time ago when I first seen the Mekons record LP the quality of Mercy is not strnen, I deducted it was some kind of Monkees inspiration band. Because the word Mekons look like it was the word Monkees with the letters jumbled around minus one e. That and they used a picture of a chimpanzee on the cover that look like a clue. Even though a chimpanzee is not a monkey it is still misassociated with the Monkees just the same.
