This set of miner songs is chilling. Had just watched last week Harlan County USA. Film has stayed with me ever since. Having read about various miner and rail strikes it was a very vivid reminder of how many lives are ruined by the greed of vicious and venal capitalists who all too often wouldn’t budge on even the basic decency of pensions, workers comp and a living wage. Most of these guys lived in or near poverty, yet did the most excruciatingly difficult work.
Should be required in every school to know what happened to their unions. With the state and the corporation joining together to literally kill workers who could no longer take being pushed to the edge with constant forced deprivation.
But so few really know the true history of the miners’ struggle, or in a larger sense how so many workers unions were brutally, violently crushed.

Thanks for the tunes, Joe M. It’s been a nice holiday Monday where I can lay in bed and listen and doze.

Now it’s time to wake up, stretch and go for a run. Nice and cool and grey in Seattle this morning. Perfect running weather.

I witnessed my a-hole beau (EX) being an a-hole to Peter Wolf, who was actually being rather nice. Peter got pissed and left in a huff, which was quite appropriate.

Of course Television was an Elektra band - they fit the profile nicely, and a few years later X. I don't think Jack had anything to do with bringing either band into the fold, but in my cosmology they sure as hell were Elektra bands.

Syncronicity...Ian Matthews sang the original "No Man's Land" on Fairport's second LP. Great show Joe.

Elektra was a scrappy underdog in the 60's. Two bands they courted that slipped away were Moby Grape, which were snagged by Columbia, and ouch, Buffalo Springfield which was wined and dined by Atco. Love um' or hate um' The Doors came out swinging and made the kiddies sit up and take notice of the big E.

My friend had a metal band in the nineties in NYC called Rhinocervs. He hadn't heard of Rhinoceros yet when he named the band. The V was meant to be a stylized U (they were the same letter in Latin). It seemed like a good idea at the time. The music my friend plays now is more like the old Rhinoceros.
