Jan Turkenburg:

:-) Hi MHlee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am
MHLee:

We had flooding supposedly yesterday. The water was pretty high and small creeks supposedly flooded, cancelling elementary school. I didn't see any flooding myself. Some other cities took a lot of water.

Listener Robert:

That picture just made me search for "Parody Club". Apparently it was in New York City and the search results turned up that same picture. Seems that was the only way that search term came to Google's attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am
MHLee:

I assume it was worse outside of the city... some of those houses are built right on the streams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
MHLee:

Interesting... on another note the fidelity on that last track was incredible for the age
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, we had similar issues in Europe earlier this summer. They are talking about moving an entire village to a safer zone. a.o.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
MHLee:

The two big cities that have flooded recently can be traced back to not managing the storm drains properly... and the floods have severe as a result
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
chresti:

Morning Jan and over/unders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am
MHLee:

I considered getting a wax cylinder playing gramaphone. The issue is the cylinders, though they are being reproduced these days, are just too expensive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am
Jan Turkenburg:

a dilemma I can relate to, MHLee...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
MHLee:

This is a raunchy number, I imagine the dance was lively
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am
MHLee:

Is this part of the ring cycle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am
MHLee:

Oh it's Brahm's hmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am

Travelers in Ireland
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
Jan Turkenburg:

"Tinkers"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
Phillippe:

howdy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am
MHLee:

In England the term has traditionally included travelers, roma, traveling showman, actual tinkers, and more...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
MHLee:

Most of Guy isn't streaming
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
MHLee:

Never heard these fine woman before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
Jan Turkenburg:

@MHLee, do you mean the stream was intermitted?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am
MHLee:

@Jan no his discography is frustratingly hard to find online
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
Jan Turkenburg:

ok
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Jan Turkenburg:

Maybe it's a good idea to do a saturday morning Guy Lombardo special, with the material I've got then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
MHLee:

So there's a trolley park nearby that close's every night with his version of "Now is the Hour", the only problem is I can't find it except live on the net
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
MHLee:

trolley park = very old amusement park one would arrive at by trolley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Jan Turkenburg:

I just did a search in my digital archive. I don't have it either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Jan Turkenburg:

I just found a recording of 'Now is the Hour' by 'Guy Lombardo & his Royal Canadians' on Spotify... Is that the one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am
MHLee:

I've seen that come up in searches, but I can't access it. Might be country locked.
  Swag For Life Member 11:00am
WR:

Hello Jan and MHLee and others over or under.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am

Hello Jan and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
happymaan:

Hello folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
MHLee:

The song was sung Maori once in an early translation which caused confusion and people to think it was a Maori song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Ursula1000!
Hi Happymaan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am
happymaan:

Hey Jan, what are we searching for? I have a different source I bet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Jan Turkenburg:

Guy Lombardo - Now is the hour. I'll play a bit from spotify in the coming break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
MHLee:

Sounds like a re-recording maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
happymaan:

what I found says it's from a 1959 album "dancing room only"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am
Jan Turkenburg:

Then it could be in stereo indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am
Feldpausch:

Hiya Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hey Adam!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am
happymaan:

I use deezer from france as my search, but I have a way to download the tracks instead of steaming them, it's cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am
MHLee:

That would be about a decade later than the song's peak but is possible. This is basically identical to the track they play www.youtube.com... but live I think
  Swag For Life Member 11:17am
WR:

Why the interest in Lombardo's version of that song?
  11:17am
MHLee:

Thanks all! Got to go get ready to teach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am
Jan Turkenburg:

good luck with that, MHLee, see ya!

Covering many bases today Jan. Red face, black face, yellow face, not sure what to call Jew and Irish (Casey and Chen) face. Some is exotica, some racial/cultural targeted. What a world we have.
  Swag For Life Member 11:39am
WR:

Chen => Cohen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am
Jan Turkenburg:

yes.. which reminded me to add the disclaimer at the bottom...
  Swag For Life Member 11:44am
WR:

Wonder if there is a book or documentary that thoroughly explores the role of race and cultural identity in entertainment. It is so multi-faceted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am
Jan Turkenburg:

I still have to read most of Tim Brooks' "The Blackface Minstrel in Mass Media"...
  Swag For Life Member 11:49am
WR:

thanks, will take a look at it.
  Swag For Life Member 11:54am
WR:

Mississippi Mud, since it has Crosby and Whiteman, got considerable attention and if I remember correctly, they re-recorded it without the word darkies.
Avatar 11:54am
Mr Fab:

Hi Jan and fellow shellac enthusiasts. Plenty of real life Mississippi mud right now, thanks to the hurricane.
