Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

I thought I recognized this sample from Oliver, but I had to Google it. It's impressive how difficult it can be to recognize a sample when there's rapping and other music over it.

Love that version of Rich Girl so much, Gwen Stefani had the really successful but not as good version in the 00s

Gouache is a real word.
Avatar 🎭 8:27pm
Listener Gregory:

Maybe Oliver is popular because artists saw it as kids, and so it has stuck in their minds. My school put it on, and I memorized all the songs as a result.
Avatar 🎭 8:28pm
Listener Gregory:

I believe Gouache (good pronunciation, Chresti) is oil paint in the form of a stick that you can draw with. It's like the oil version of a pastel stick.

Inspectah Deck is also a member of Czarface. Highly recommended sample-heavy trip hop. They did a few collaborative albums with recently-departed MF DOOM.

Thanks, Bronwyn! Super cool to see DJs take a chance doing something different, and maybe out of your comfort zone. Would love a part 2 in the future!
Avatar 🎭 9:07pm
Listener Gregory:

Re: Googoosh, thanks for the explanation, BB. It reminds me of Phil Glass's Heroes Symphony (actually a trio of symphonies based on David Bowie's Berlin trilogy). It doesn't sound at all like the Bowie record, but each movement is based on some musical element of the song, which Glass based the composition on. If I were a musician, I might be able to hear it. (I did get the riff from "Heaven on Their Minds.")

Ken From Hyde Park:

'Night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
doctorjazz:

It depends on the part sampled, some are clearly stated (Ray Charles had a famous sample, I look cool when I tell my daughter what was sampled). Sometimesit's just a small instrumental snippet (as LG mentioned Glass did); I'm not sure the original performer can always recognize those. I suspect legal issues, royalties, etc, have to do work these choices.

WR:

thank you, got busy with work near the end. Will relisten. Fun show.
